Home > Guides > Dictating a letter
Yes. Speak the letter into your phone's dictation tool, fix the transcript, and give the text to your AI assistant: it drafts or formats the letter, reads it back for your approval, quotes the price, and sends it to be printed and mailed after you pay. You never touch a keyboard or a printer.
| Method | How it works | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Phone keyboard mic | Tap the microphone on your keyboard and talk; the text appears where you dictate | Background noise garbles words; find a quiet room first |
| AI assistant voice mode | Talk to ChatGPT or Claude directly and tell it the letter; it transcribes and drafts in one step | Still read the draft it writes before approving anything |
| Voice memo, then transcribe | Record yourself talking, then get the recording transcribed | The extra step makes it easy to skip proofreading, which is the one step you cannot skip |
Dictation tools write down what you say, not what you mean, so speak the punctuation: say "comma," "period," and "new paragraph" as you go. Spell out proper names ("Kowalski, K-O-W-A-L-S-K-I") and read numbers digit by digit, because "one twenty five" can come out as 125, 1.25, or "one twenty five" depending on the tool's mood. Homophones are the classic trap: "their," "there," and "they're" all sound identical, and dictation picks whichever it likes. After the transcript lands, read it once yourself before handing it to your assistant. Fixing three wrong words now beats fixing a printed letter later.
Once you have the text, tell your AI assistant what the letter is and who it goes to. Through the LetterAgent connector it will draft or format the letter, confirm the recipient's address with you, give you a per-letter quote with the page count verified, and wait for your approval. You approve the exact price, pay once through Stripe Checkout, and the letter is printed and mailed. No account, no signup, no subscription. Recipients need a US or Canadian address; you can be anywhere in the world.
Dictated letters have a higher error rate than typed ones, and a mailed letter is permanent: you cannot unsend paper. Before you approve anything, ask your assistant to read the final draft back to you, address and all. Check three things specifically. One: the recipient's name and address, because the address shows through the envelope window and a wrong address means the letter goes to the wrong place. Two: every number, amount, and date, because dictation mangles these most. Three: the tone, because spoken words read more casually than you expect and a formal letter may need tightening. This read-back is your last free correction; everything after it costs postage.
