What is USPS Parcel Select?

USPS Parcel Select is the post office's cheapest ground shipping product, sold only to commercial shippers and consolidators who bring USPS truckloads of parcels. Those shippers move parcels most of the way themselves, then hand them to USPS for the final leg. When it shows on your tracking, the seller used a discount label, which is why delivery takes a little longer than Priority Mail.

Who can actually buy it?

Businesses with USPS commercial pricing agreements, and the consolidators that aggregate everyone else's volume. A regular person walking into a post office will never be offered it: the retail equivalent for the same job is USPS Ground Advantage. If you are a Canadian seller shipping to US customers, you do not buy Parcel Select directly either: your consolidator (Chit Chats, Stallion, and the like) buys it and you buy the label from them. Honest scope note: Parcel Select is a US-only product, and LetterAgent's shipping labels are Canada-only Xpresspost, so we cannot put a Parcel Select label on your box. This guide is here so the term makes sense when you meet it.

Why is it on my tracking page?

Because the seller shipped your order with a discount label bought through a consolidator. The parcel travels most of the way on the consolidator's trucks and only touches USPS at a facility near your address, which is why the tracking can show gaps: USPS's scans start at induction, and everything before that lives on the consolidator's tracking page. Seeing "Parcel Select" is not a warning sign. It is just the paper trail of the cheapest way to get a parcel to you, and the slightly longer transit is the trade you are making for the seller's lower shipping cost.

How does it compare to the counter options?

Think of it as the wholesale version of ground shipping. Ground Advantage is what you buy as a person for the same kind of parcel; Parcel Select is what a business buys for hundreds of them. Priority Mail is the step up: faster, with tracking and a modest amount of included insurance, at a higher price. The practical difference for a recipient is small: a Parcel Select parcel arrives a day or two later than Priority and the tracking has a quiet stretch in the middle. For a seller, the difference lands on the profit of every order.
