Why did my UPS package get handed to USPS?

Your parcel was sent with an economy service like UPS SurePost or FedEx SmartPost, where the private carrier does the long haul and hands the last mile to the post office. The tracking splits between two carriers, which looks confusing but is exactly how the service is designed.

Which services hand off to the post office?

UPS calls theirs SurePost (and an older variant, Mail Innovations). FedEx calls theirs SmartPost. Amazon has its own version with the post office and with its own delivery network. In every case, the idea is the same: the private carrier moves the parcel through its own network across the country, then drops it at the destination post office, and a USPS letter carrier delivers it to your door or mailbox. This is how many online stores keep shipping cheap on small parcels. If you paid for economy shipping, or the store offered free shipping, there is a good chance this is what you got.

The handoff is not a mistake and not a sign of a problem. It is the service the sender bought. The parcel was always going to finish its journey in a USPS truck.

Why does the tracking look so strange?

Here is where the confusion starts. When the parcel is moving through UPS's network, the UPS tracking page shows movement. The moment UPS hands it to the post office, UPS's updates usually stop with something like "transferred to post office." From there, USPS tracking takes over with its own scan events.

The tricky part: the tracking number is often the same 20- or 22-digit USPS number across both systems, and many people never realize they should paste it into the USPS tracking page instead of the UPS one. The non-obvious consequence is a gap. Between the handoff scan and the first USPS "arrived at post office" scan, the parcel is in a trailer full of thousands of other parcels waiting to be inducted. That gap can last a day or two, and during it the parcel looks like it vanished. It almost certainly did not.

Can I speed it up or reroute it during the handoff?

Mostly no, and that is another source of frustration. Rerouting tools like UPS My Choice work while the parcel is in UPS's hands. Once USPS accepts it, the recipient-facing USPS tools take over, and USPS Package Intercept has to be requested by the shipper, not the recipient. So if you need to change the address mid-shipment, the window is the UPS leg, and it closes at the handoff scan. After that, your options shrink to watching the USPS tracking and picking the parcel up at the post office if it cannot be delivered.

Can you pay to upgrade it to a full UPS door delivery? Sometimes, while it is still in the UPS network, an upgrade is offered. It is not guaranteed, and it gets more expensive the closer the parcel gets to the handoff. If speed mattered, the time to think about it was at checkout, not in tracking.

Does this happen in Canada too?

The exact brand names are American, but the pattern exists in Canada. Some US economy services cross the border and finish through Canada Post, and Canadian couriers like Purolator have arrangements where rural last miles run through the postal network. The same tracking confusion applies: when two carriers share a parcel, paste the number into the carrier that currently has it, not the one that started with it. For a LetterAgent Xpresspost label, by contrast, Canada Post handles the whole trip, so there is no handoff and no split tracking.
