Wait a day first: carriers sometimes scan a letter delivered before it's actually in your box, especially near the end of a route. Then check every plausible spot: mailbox, door, household members, neighbors, building office. If it's still missing, call the local post office with the tracking number: they can see where the carrier's scanner was at the delivery scan.
| Step | What to do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Wait one business day | Don't panic on day one | Premature scans and split deliveries resolve themselves overnight |
| 2. Search the property | Mailbox, doorstep, behind planters, garage, parcel locker | Carriers leave items in odd but sensible spots |
| 3. Ask around | Household members, neighbors, building manager or front desk | Someone accepted it for you, or it went to the wrong unit |
| 4. Call the local post office | Give them the tracking number and ask about the scan location | Supervisors can see the GPS point of the delivery scan |
| 5. File a missing mail search | Online via USPS or Canada Post | Triggers an actual search of the facility that handled it |
The delivery scan is supposed to happen at the moment of delivery, but the real world is messier. Near the end of a long route, a carrier may scan a batch of items as delivered before walking them to each door, then get interrupted or run out of time. Substitute carriers unfamiliar with a route misdeliver more often. None of this is supposed to happen, all of it does, and most of it sorts itself out within a day: the letter shows up in the next day's mail or a neighbor brings it over. That's why waiting is step one, not step five.
More than the tracking page shows. The carrier's scanner logs a GPS location with each scan, and a supervisor at the local office can pull it up and tell you exactly where the "delivered" scan happened. If the pin is on your street, the letter is probably in a neighbor's box. If the pin is three streets over, it was misdelivered and the carrier can be sent to retrieve it. Call the local office directly, not the national helpline: the national line can only read you the same tracking page you're already staring at.
If the scan location was your address, nobody nearby has it, and it's been more than a couple of days, consider that the letter was taken after delivery. Mail theft spikes around holidays and in buildings with unsecured boxes. File a report: in the US that's the Postal Inspection Service or the USPS OIG for carrier misconduct; in Canada, report to Canada Post and local police. For the future, a locking mailbox or a PO box ends this category of problem permanently.
