Regular letters, no: neither USPS nor Canada Post delivers ordinary letter mail on Sundays. Packages are the exception. USPS delivers parcels on Sundays in many areas, and Canada Post delivers parcels on Sundays in some cities during peak season. If a letter absolutely must arrive on a Sunday, USPS Priority Mail Express is the service built for that.
| Service | Delivered on Sundays? |
|---|---|
| Ordinary letters (US and Canada) | No |
| USPS Priority Mail Express | Yes: 365 days a year, including Sundays and holidays |
| USPS parcels | Often yes, especially in metro areas |
| Canada Post parcels | In some cities, during peak season |
| Post office counters | Closed on Sundays, with rare exceptions |
Letter delivery is a six-day operation in the US and five days in Canada, and Sunday letter routes were cut long ago as a cost measure. Sunday parcel delivery is a different business: it runs on separate routes, driven largely by e-commerce contracts. USPS Sunday delivery grew out of its Amazon partnership, with carriers running parcel-only routes while the letter carriers stay home.
So when a package arrives on a Sunday, that's a parcel network doing its thing: your letter sitting in the same sorting facility waits for Monday's letter routes. The two networks share buildings but not schedules.
Sunday parcel delivery is also a metro phenomenon. In rural areas, don't expect Sunday packages either: the economics only work where stops are dense. And Canada Post's Sunday parcel delivery is mostly a peak-season program in major cities, not a year-round national service. If you're outside a big city, plan on Monday like everyone else.
The same split applies. No regular letter delivery on US federal holidays or Canadian statutory holidays: the letter network is dark. Priority Mail Express still runs on holidays, which is why it's the answer for anything truly time-critical. If you're counting days for a deadline, don't count the holiday: a letter mailed the day before Thanksgiving isn't moving until the day after.
One quirk worth knowing: when a holiday falls on a Sunday, the observed day off often shifts to Monday, which kills Monday delivery too. A Sunday Christmas means no letter movement Sunday or Monday. Holiday weeks are the one time of year when checking the calendar matters as much as checking the mailbox.
Generally no. Blue collection boxes show no Sunday pickup on their placards, and the mail inside waits for Monday. Some post office lobbies stay open with drop slots on Sundays, but anything dropped there still waits for Monday processing. Sunday is a dead day for letters in both directions: nothing goes out, nothing comes in, except Express.
