First-Class vs Priority Mail: which should I use?

Use First-Class Mail for letters: it's the standard, cheapest way to send an envelope, and it arrives in a few business days. Use Priority Mail for heavier document packages, where you get faster delivery, included tracking, and some insurance. For an ordinary letter, Priority Mail is overkill: you're paying parcel prices for speed you don't need.

What is First-Class Mail good for?

First-Class Mail is the default service for anything that fits in an envelope: letters, cards, and light documents up to the First-Class weight limit. A single stamp (or the metered equivalent) covers a standard one-ounce letter, and heavier letters just need additional postage. It moves quickly for what it costs: most letters arrive within a few business days, and for non-urgent correspondence that's plenty.

The mistake people make is assuming "priority" means "more reliable." It doesn't. First-Class Mail gets the same careful handling as Priority; the difference is speed and the extras bundled in, not how safely your letter travels. If your letter isn't time-sensitive, First-Class is the right answer and always has been.

When is Priority Mail worth it?

SituationVerdictWhy
A one-page letter, no rushFirst-ClassCheapest, arrives in a few days, nothing more needed

Notice the pattern: Priority earns its keep on weight, speed, and tracking, not on letters. The moment your documents get heavy enough that First-Class postage starts stacking up, Priority's flat-rate envelope often becomes the cheaper option: anything that fits inside ships for one price no matter how much it weighs. That's the crossover point where Priority stops being a luxury and starts being the smart buy.

What about the flat-rate envelope specifically?

The Priority Mail flat-rate envelope deserves its own mention because it's the best deal in the post office for heavy documents. One envelope, one price, as many pages as you can fit inside without tearing it. Legal filings, contract packages, and thick reports that would cost a fortune in First-Class postage by weight suddenly have a fixed, predictable cost. The envelope is free at the post office; you only pay when you mail it.

Two caveats. First, the envelope has to close normally: if you have to force it or tape it bulging, it doesn't qualify. Second, don't use a flat-rate envelope for a two-page letter just because it feels official: you'd pay several times the First-Class price for the same delivery speed. Match the service to the weight, and you'll never overpay.
