Home > Guides > Ship to a hospital
Address the parcel to the patient by full name, plus the hospital name, ward or unit, and room number if you know it. Hospital mailrooms sort by patient and unit, so a parcel with only the hospital address can sit unclaimed.
Put the patient's full name on the first line, exactly as the hospital has it on file, including any hyphenated name. Next, add the ward, unit, or floor, then the room number if you know it. Then the hospital name and its street address. A parcel addressed to "Patient Services" or to the hospital alone may reach the mailroom but stall there, because staff must match an unnamed parcel to a patient list, and a patient who was moved or discharged in the meantime is hard to match at all.
Patients move wards, and a room number from yesterday can be stale today. If you are unsure of the current ward, call the hospital's main line and ask for the mailroom or the unit clerk, and confirm the details before you ship. Add your own name and return address clearly, so the mailroom can reach you if the patient has left. A short note inside, with your name and phone number, helps staff route a parcel that arrives after a transfer.
| Line on the label | Example style | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Recipient | Patient full name | Mailroom matches parcels to patients by name |
| Unit and room | Ward or unit, room number | Gets the parcel to the right floor without delay |
| Hospital | Hospital name and street address | Large hospitals have several entrances and buildings |
| Sender | Your name and return address | Staff can return or redirect it if the patient has left |
Think about infection control, space, and the patient's condition before you pack. Soft, washable items, books, magazines, puzzle books, and small comfort items are usually welcome. Flowers are a classic gift, but many intensive care units, transplant wards, and allergy-sensitive areas restrict or refuse them, because of pollen, soil, and standing water. Balloons are restricted in some units too, since latex allergies are a real concern and a popped balloon startles a ward.
Food is the trickiest category. A patient may be on a restricted diet, nil by mouth before a procedure, or unable to eat at all, and a box of chocolates can sit untouched or, worse, get eaten against medical advice. Ask the patient or their family first, and check with the unit if you are unsure. Scented items, such as strong perfumes or heavily scented lotions, can bother nearby patients in shared rooms, so keep scents mild or skip them.
If you want to send something on the restricted list, call the unit first and ask. A nurse or unit clerk will tell you plainly what is allowed on that ward, and that call takes less time than shipping a parcel that gets held or returned.
A parcel addressed to a hospital rarely goes straight to a patient's room. It arrives at a central mailroom or receiving dock, gets sorted by patient name and unit, and is then carried to the ward, often once or twice a day rather than on arrival. That means "delivered" on tracking may mean "delivered to the mailroom", with a further wait before the patient sees it. For a time-sensitive gift, ship early and tell the patient to ask ward staff about mailroom deliveries.
Some hospitals also screen parcels, and a parcel that looks damaged, leaking, or suspicious can be held. Pack neatly, seal well, and label clearly, and do not write alarming words on the outside of the box. If the parcel has not reached the patient a day after tracking shows delivery, the mailroom is the first place to call, with the tracking number and the patient's full name ready.
LetterAgent shipping labels are Canada Post Xpresspost labels, Canada-only, for parcels up to 5 kg. You ask your AI assistant, approve the exact quoted price, pay once through Stripe, and receive a label PDF. For a hospital parcel, that tracked service helps, since you can confirm the mailroom delivery and follow up with the unit if the parcel stalls there.
