No: Canada Post is closed nationally on November 11, so there is no collection or delivery anywhere in the country. The quirk is that Remembrance Day is not a statutory holiday in Ontario or Quebec, where many businesses stay open, but Canada Post follows federal rules and shuts down anyway. Plan around it.
| Who | November 11 status |
|---|---|
| Canada Post | Closed nationwide: no collection, no delivery, post offices shut |
| Federal government offices | Closed: Remembrance Day is a federal statutory holiday |
| Ontario and Quebec businesses | Generally open: not a statutory holiday in those provinces |
| Other provinces (most) | Closed or observing: statutory in most provinces outside Ontario and Quebec |
| Couriers (Purolator, UPS, FedEx) | Often operating: private couriers set their own holiday schedules |
Canada Post is a federal Crown corporation, so its employees fall under federal labour rules, and Remembrance Day is a statutory holiday under federal law. Provincial holiday rules don't apply to it. The result is the slightly odd situation where a Toronto office worker gets their mail-free Wednesday while their own employer treats November 11 as a normal workday. The same federal logic is why banks close on Remembrance Day even in provinces that don't observe it.
It simply waits a day. There is no weekend-style catch-up run and no partial service: the entire network pauses, and everything scheduled for the 11th moves on the next business day. If November 11 falls on a weekend, Canada Post doesn't add a weekday closure on top of it, the same way a Sunday isn't a holiday for mail purposes. For time-sensitive letters, the practical move is to mail a day earlier or accept the one-day slip. LetterAgent letters mailed just before the holiday enter the mail stream normally and simply pause with everything else on the 11th.
Banks do close nationally on Remembrance Day, following the same federal holiday rules as Canada Post. That matters for mail-adjacent errands: if you planned to buy money orders, pay a bill in person, or pick up a held package at a postal outlet inside a bank branch area, the closure hits all of those at once. Private couriers are the exception worth checking individually: their depots often run a modified schedule, so a courier package can move while the postal system stands still.
Think of Remembrance Day the way you'd think of a mid-week public holiday. Anything with a deadline right after November 11 should be mailed a day early, and don't expect tracking to update on the day itself. Government mail rooms are closed too, so letters to federal agencies sit unopened until the next business day regardless. One small mercy: because the closure is a single day in mid-November, well outside the December crunch, the backlog clears fast and service is normal by the morning of the 12th.
