I printed a shipping label with the wrong address. Can I fix it?

If the parcel has not been dropped off yet, the fix is easy: void the label and buy a new one with the correct address. Never cross out and rewrite an address on a printed label. Once the parcel is moving, your options shrink to carrier intercept services or asking the recipient to refuse it.

Why can't I just fix the address by hand?

Because the address on the label is not really the address: the barcode is. Sorting machines read the barcode, not the printed text, so a hand-corrected label sends the parcel exactly where the barcode says, which is the wrong place. Worse, a label with mismatched text and barcode looks tampered with, and some carriers will pull it out of the stream for inspection. The printed label is a single-use document: once the address is wrong, the label is done.

The same goes for peeling the label off and sticking a corrected one on top. Residue and double barcodes confuse scanners, and if the old barcode peeks through, the parcel can bounce between the two addresses. Start fresh on a clean surface.

Where is the parcel? What you can do
Still in your handsVoid the label (refund if unused), print a corrected one
Dropped off, not yet movingIntercept may still work with couriers; postal parcels are harder to stop
In transitCarrier delivery intercept (UPS, FedEx offer this for a fee); or ask the recipient to refuse delivery so it returns
Already delivered to the wrong addressContact the occupant; if unrecoverable, file a claim with whoever sold you the label

How do I void a label I haven't used?

Almost every label seller, from carrier websites to postage platforms to marketplaces, lets you void an unused label for a refund within a window, usually a week or two from purchase. The key word is unused: once the parcel has been scanned into the carrier's system, the postage is considered consumed and the refund option disappears. So void first, then rebuy; do not wait until you have the corrected label in hand.

Keep the void confirmation. Refunds on voided labels sometimes take several days to land, and having the confirmation number ends the argument if the credit does not appear. If you bought the label through a third party rather than directly from the carrier, void it through that same third party: the carrier cannot refund a label it did not sell you.

What if the parcel is already moving?

Private couriers sell delivery intercept as a feature: for a fee, UPS and FedEx can reroute a parcel mid-transit to a corrected address or hold it at a pickup location. It works best when requested early, before the parcel reaches the destination facility. Postal services are much more limited here: once a parcel is in the mail stream, there is generally no mechanism to pull it out and redirect it, which is one more reason to catch the mistake before drop-off.

If intercept is not available, the fallback is the recipient side. Contact the person at the wrong address and ask them to refuse the delivery or hold it for you; a refused parcel returns to sender. If the wrong address is a stranger's home, be polite and quick about it, and offer to cover any hassle. And if the address does not exist at all, the parcel will usually bounce back to the return address on its own, which is why a correct return address on every parcel is worth the ink.

How do I stop this from happening again?
