Do shipping labels expire?

Yes, effectively. Every shipping label carries a ship-by date or validity window set by the carrier. If you drop the parcel off after that date, the label may be rejected at the counter or scan without the right service attached. When a label expires unused, you usually need a new label: expired labels are rarely refunded automatically.

Where do you find the ship-by date?

On the label itself, near the service marking, and in the confirmation email from wherever you bought it. Online-bought labels typically give you a window of days or weeks from purchase: the exact window varies by carrier and service. Check the date before you pack, not after.

Why do labels have expiry dates at all?

Postage is an accounting event. When you buy a label, the carrier records the postage revenue against a ship date; the validity window keeps that accounting clean. The date also protects you indirectly: postage rates change, and a label bought at old rates can't circulate forever.

Here's what surprises people: reprinting the same PDF doesn't buy you more time. The ship-by date is encoded in the purchase, not in the paper. A fresh printout of an expired label is still expired.

What happens if you ship after the date?

SituationLikely outcome
A day or two past the dateCounter may still accept it; tracking may look odd
Well past the dateRejected at the counter; you buy a new label
Dropped in a box unnoticedMay travel, but service guarantees (if any) don't apply

The worst case isn't a lost parcel: it's a parcel that travels on an expired label and gets postage-due treatment or returned to sender. Either way, the recipient's experience is worse than if you'd just bought a fresh label.

Can you get a refund for an unused expired label?

Sometimes, but rarely automatically. Most carriers require you to request a refund or credit for the unused label, and some take a small processing deduction. Don't count on the money coming back on its own: check the carrier's refund process for unused labels and file the request.

How do you avoid buying labels too early?

Buy the label when the parcel is packed, addressed, and ready to drop off: not days earlier. If your shipping plans might change, hold off on the purchase until they're firm. A label bought "just in case" is a label that can quietly expire in your downloads folder.

With LetterAgent, labels are quoted per shipment: describe the parcel to your AI assistant, approve the exact price, pay once, and get the PDF. Buy it when you're ready to ship so the label is fresh on drop-off day. Canada-only Xpresspost, 5 kg max.
