Can I fax a bank statement?

Yes, a bank statement can be faxed, and lenders, landlords, and visa officers routinely ask for it this way. Send only the months requested, black out the full account number, and keep the fax confirmation page, since a statement shows far more than a balance. This guide covers general bank-statement faxing; a statement requested by a specific lender may come with its own checklist.

Who asks for a faxed bank statement?

The usual requesters are mortgage lenders verifying assets and reserves, landlords checking that rent is affordable, immigration and visa officers confirming funds, and accountants assembling a file. Lenders commonly ask for two or three months of statements, and they want every page of each month, including blank-looking pages, because a missing page raises a question about what was left out. If a requester asks for "all pages," send all pages of the requested months, even the ones that show nothing but a header and a zero balance.

LetterAgent faxing is currently available in testing: you ask your AI assistant, get a per-fax quote with the page count verified, approve the exact total, pay once through Stripe, and the fax is sent to a US or Canadian fax number. Fax is in testing and activation is in progress, so it is described as available in testing, not as a same-day guarantee. There are no inbound faxes: LetterAgent sends faxes out only.

What should I black out?

A bank statement is one of the most revealing documents a person can send, and the recipient rarely needs all of it. Work through the statement before faxing and redact on a copy, never the original.

Field on the statementWhat to doWhy
Full account numberBlack it out, leaving only the last four digits if the bank prints themThe recipient verifies balances, not the number itself
Transactions unrelated to the requestLeave them, unless the recipient agreed to a redacted versionLenders check for large unexplained deposits, so gaps look worse than ordinary spending
Other accounts listed on the same statementSend only the pages for the requested account, if the bank issues them separatelyExtra accounts hand over data nobody asked for
Balances and transaction historyLeave visible for the requested monthsThis is the evidence the recipient is actually reviewing

One point deserves emphasis: do not redact transactions to hide spending you are embarrassed about. Lenders and visa officers read statements partly to spot large, unexplained deposits, and a visible gap in the transaction sequence is more suspicious than an ordinary purchase. If a deposit needs explaining, a one-line note attached to the fax ("deposit on May 3 was a gift from family") answers the question before it is asked.

How do I keep the fax readable?

Bank statements are dense, small-print documents, and fax resolution is modest, so legibility needs a little care. Print the statement at full size, never shrunk to fit two pages onto one, and use the original PDF print rather than a phone photo of a screen, which adds glare and skew. If your bank offers a print-friendly statement view, use it. After faxing, check the confirmation page for the page count: if it shows fewer pages than you sent, one page failed to transmit, and you should resend the full set rather than just the missing page, so the recipient's copy stays in order.

Is faxing a statement safe?

A fax travels over a phone line to a specific machine, which means it is not sitting in an email inbox or a shared drive, and that is part of why institutions still prefer it for financial documents. The weak point is the receiving end: a fax machine in a busy office prints pages that anyone passing by can see. That is why a cover sheet matters. Put the recipient's name, your name, the page count, and a line asking the recipient to confirm receipt on the cover sheet, and call a day or two later to confirm the pages reached the right person's file. Keep the confirmation page with your copy of the statement.
