Is mail delivered on Veterans Day?

No. Wednesday, November 11, 2026 is Veterans Day, a federal holiday, so USPS post offices are closed and there is no regular mail delivery. Letters mailed the day before simply wait until Thursday. The same date is Remembrance Day in Canada, and Canada Post is closed with no delivery that day either.

Is the post office open on Veterans Day?

No. Veterans Day is one of the federal holidays the Postal Service observes, and it appears on the official USPS 2026 holiday calendar for Wednesday, November 11. Retail counters are closed, carriers do not run their routes, and there is no pickup from collection boxes. Mail already moving through the network sits where it is until the next business day.

What happens on the Canadian side that day?

November 11 is Remembrance Day in Canada, and Canada Post observes it too. Post offices and retail outlets are closed, and there is no mail pickup or delivery. If you are sending a letter to a Canadian address that week, the Wednesday closure applies on both sides of the border, so plan around it the same way. One Canadian wrinkle worth knowing: because Remembrance Day is not a statutory holiday in every province, some private businesses stay open, but the postal system closes nationwide regardless.

Do UPS and FedEx deliver on Veterans Day?

Mostly yes, which surprises people. UPS generally operates on Veterans Day, and FedEx runs a modified schedule, because neither follows the federal holiday calendar the way USPS does. Private carriers treat it as a normal or near-normal business day. The one exception to watch is Thanksgiving two weeks later, when all three shut down.

Does any mail move at all on Veterans Day?

A little, behind the scenes. While retail counters close and carriers stay home, some processing plants run limited operations to keep the network from choking on the backlog, and Priority Mail Express keeps its own schedule with limited delivery. But nothing you drop in a collection box on Wednesday gets picked up, and no regular route runs. For practical purposes, the system pauses and resumes Thursday morning.

What should you avoid mailing that week?

Anything with a hard deadline near the holiday. Court filings, bill payments, and time-sensitive notices should go out early in the week before, not on Tuesday with fingers crossed. Tuesday drop-offs still move Tuesday night, but a single hiccup pushes them past the Wednesday dead zone and into Thursday. Certified and registered mail keep their tracking through the pause, which helps, but the tracking will simply show the item waiting. The Wednesday closure is also a good reminder for the bigger one coming: Thanksgiving shuts down all three major carriers, USPS included, so the Veterans Day week is your rehearsal for planning around a dead day.

How should you plan around the closure?

Work backward from the holiday. Anything that must arrive by Friday, November 13 should be in the mail by Monday the 9th at the latest, because the Wednesday closure removes a full transit day from the middle of the week. Bills and legal correspondence with mid-November deadlines deserve extra care: a deadline of the 12th means mailing no later than the 6th. And if you send letters through an assistant with LetterAgent, remember the print-and-mail step happens on business days: approve your quote by Tuesday and the letter enters the mailstream before the Wednesday pause.
