USPS Smart Lockers are secure self-service pickup lockers at post offices and other locations. When a package goes to a locker, you get an email with a QR code and a pickup window; you scan the code at the locker to open your compartment. They also handle Label Broker returns.
LetterAgent is Canada-only for shipping: our labels are Canada Post Xpresspost, so Smart Lockers are a US service LetterAgent can't route your parcel to. This guide answers the general question anyway.
The carrier places your parcel in a locker compartment instead of leaving it at your door. You receive an email with a QR code and a pickup code, plus the address of the locker and how long you have to collect the item. At the locker, you scan the QR code (or type the code) and the compartment door opens. No counter line, no ID check, no signature.
The detail that surprises people: you don't choose the locker. The sender or the carrier's delivery system routes the parcel to a locker near your address. If you prefer locker pickup in general, check USPS's locker locator to see which locations near you have them, and note that some retailers let you pick a locker location at checkout.
The pickup window is typically a few days, stated in your pickup email. It is shorter than the standard post-office hold window, so treat the email like a deadline. If you miss it, the parcel is returned to the sender, the same as any unclaimed package.
USPS Label Broker lets retailers email you a QR code instead of a printable return label. Smart Lockers accept Label Broker returns: you show the QR code at the locker, the locker prints your return label on the spot, and you drop the package in. This is the locker feature people use most. It means you can return an online order with no printer, no tape, and no post office line. Canada has no exact equivalent from Canada Post, though some retailers offer QR-based returns through other couriers.
Yes, pickup from a Smart Locker is free for the recipient; the sender pays the postage. You do not need a USPS account. The main limits are size (lockers fit standard parcels, not oversized freight) and availability: not every post office or neighbourhood has one. Rural areas are less likely to have locker coverage than cities.

Reasonably. Your parcel sits inside a locked metal compartment in a monitored location, which beats a doorstep. The QR codes are one-time use and expire after pickup. Like any public locker, they are not invincible: the main real-world risk is package theft by someone watching you open the compartment, so collect promptly and do not leave it overnight.
