Do UPS or FedEx offer certified mail?

No. Certified mail is a USPS-only product, so UPS and FedEx cannot sell it. Both carriers do offer their own signature-on-delivery services for documents and parcels, but neither creates the legal proof of mailing that certified mail provides. That proof is exactly why lawyers, landlords, and courts still route this kind of mail through USPS even when they ship everything else privately.

What is the closest equivalent at UPS and FedEx?

Each carrier has a signature service you can add to a shipment:

CarrierServiceWhat you get
USPSCertified MailProof of mailing, tracking, and a delivery record with signature; the legal standard
UPSSignature Required / Adult Signature RequiredSignature captured at delivery; no formal proof-of-mailing document
FedExDirect Signature / Indirect Signature / Adult SignatureSignature captured at delivery; delivery record in tracking

These are genuinely useful for making sure a package lands in the right hands. They are not the same thing as certified mail, because certified mail's value is the paper trail from the moment of mailing: the post office records that it accepted your item, and that record is what holds up in disputes about whether and when something was sent.

Why do lawyers insist on USPS certified mail?

Because courts and statutes are written around it. Demand letters, eviction notices, and contract terminations often need to be sent in a way the law recognizes, and "certified mail, return receipt requested" is the phrase that appears in leases, state laws, and court rules. A FedEx tracking page showing a signature proves delivery happened, but it does not match the legal wording. When the requirement says certified mail, only USPS certified mail satisfies it, and sending it any other way can mean redoing the whole notice.

Can I drop a UPS or FedEx envelope at the post office, or vice versa?

No, and this trips people up. USPS will not accept a UPS or FedEx shipment, and UPS and FedEx locations will not accept USPS mail (a UPS Store is a private franchise and may accept USPS drop-offs as a courtesy, but that is not the same as handing it to the carrier). Each network only moves its own postage. If you bought a UPS label, the package has to enter the UPS system; if you need certified mail, it has to go through USPS.

What about Canada?

The same split exists north of the border. Canada Post's Registered Mail is the Canadian equivalent of US certified mail, with tracking and signature, and it is a Canada Post product only. UPS and FedEx in Canada have their own signature options for parcels, but for the legal-grade proof of mailing, it is Canada Post Registered Mail.

How does LetterAgent handle certified and registered mail?

LetterAgent offers the registered option directly: US Certified Mail for American recipients and Canada Registered Mail for Canadian ones. You ask your AI assistant, approve the exact quoted price up front, and the letter goes out with tracking and proof of delivery. If your situation actually calls for certified mail, which usually means a legal or contractual reason, the private carriers cannot substitute, so check what your lease, contract, or court rule requires before you choose.
