Do you have to sign for certified mail, and what happens if nobody is home?

Certified mail does not always require a signature. The carrier normally attempts to get one, but if nobody answers, they leave a notice slip and hold the letter at the post office for pickup. Restricted delivery is the stricter version: only the named recipient can sign. You can schedule a redelivery or leave the slip signed for the carrier.

Does certified mail always need a signature?

Not from the recipient specifically. The carrier will try to get a signature at the door, but if nobody is home, any responsible adult at the address can usually sign for ordinary certified mail: a spouse, a roommate, a coworker at a business address. The exception is restricted delivery, where only the named person, or someone they authorized in writing, can sign. Carriers check ID in that case.

This distinction matters for senders. If you need proof that one particular person received the letter, ordinary certified mail does not guarantee that: you need the restricted delivery add-on.

What is the notice slip, and what do I do with it?

The slip is PS Form 3849, the peach or yellow card the carrier leaves when a signature-required item cannot be delivered. It tells you what was attempted, where the item is being held, and when it will be returned to the sender if unclaimed. USPS holds these items for 15 days.

You have three options. Pick it up at the post office listed on the slip with photo ID. Request redelivery online or by phone for another attempt. Or sign the slip itself and leave it where the carrier will find it, authorizing them to leave the item or try again. The signed-slip option is the one people forget, and it is the fastest when you will be home the next day.

What if I ignore the notice?

After the hold period, the letter goes back to the sender. For the recipient, that is the end of it, but for the sender it is actually useful: the returned piece documents that delivery was attempted and the recipient did not claim it. In legal and business disputes, that paper trail is often exactly what the sender needed. A refused or unclaimed certified letter still proves the sender tried.

Does Canada Post work the same way?

Close enough. Canada Post's equivalent services leave a delivery notice card when nobody is available to sign, and the item waits at the designated post office or retail outlet for pickup with ID. The hold period and pickup process are similar, though the form numbers and card colors differ.

Getting certified mail without the post office trip

LetterAgent offers a certified option on letters: US Certified Mail or Canada Registered Mail, which adds tracking and proof of delivery. The flow is the same as a standard letter: describe it to your AI assistant, approve the exact quoted price, pay once, and it is printed and mailed. You get the proof-of-delivery paper trail without standing in line.
