Can I ship a package to a hotel?

Yes. Address the parcel to the guest's name, care of the hotel, and include your arrival date so the front desk can match it to your reservation. Call or email the hotel first to confirm they hold packages for guests: some charge a receiving fee, and some refuse oversized items outright. Time the shipment to arrive at or just after check-in, never days before.

DoDon't
Put the guest's full name (as on the reservation) on the first address lineAddress it only to the hotel name: an unnamed parcel is hard to match to a guest
Add "c/o" or "Guest arriving [date]" on the second lineShip it to arrive a week early: storage space is limited and parcels get returned
Confirm the hold policy and any fee before you shipAssume every hotel accepts parcels: small inns and B&Bs often do not
Include your phone number on the label or inside the boxShip anything irreplaceable without tracking

How do I address a package to a hotel?

The format that works everywhere:

Jane Smith
c/o Grand Plaza Hotel, Guest arriving Oct 15
123 Main Street
City, ST 12345

The guest name is the critical line. Hotel mail rooms sort by guest name against the reservation system, so the name on the parcel must match the name on the booking. If someone else made the reservation, use the name they booked under, or call the hotel and tell them a parcel is coming under your name. The arrival date on the second line is what stops your box from being treated as abandoned after a few days.

Will the hotel charge me to receive it?

Sometimes, and the fee is more common than travelers expect. Many business and convention hotels charge a per-parcel receiving and storage fee, and it can be steep for oversized boxes. The fee usually applies whether or not you asked about it in advance, which is why the confirmation call matters: ask "do you accept guest parcels, is there a fee, and is there a size limit?" One email saves an argument at checkout.

Two edge cases to know about. First, some hotels will not accept parcels for guests who have not checked in yet, so a box that arrives before you do can be refused at the dock. Second, if you are shipping to a conference or event, the hotel's business center or the event organizer often has a separate receiving process with its own deadlines and fees: use that channel rather than the front desk.

When should I send it?

Aim for arrival on your check-in day or the day after. Anything earlier sits in a back room where it can be misplaced, and hotels do clear out unclaimed parcels. If you are shipping internationally to a hotel abroad, build in extra days for customs, and remember that duties may be due on delivery: the hotel will not pay them for you, and a parcel held for unpaid duties can miss your stay entirely.

For the return trip, the same logic applies in reverse. If you buy something heavy on a trip and want to ship it home, most hotel front desks can point you to the nearest drop-off or arrange a courier pickup, but they will not pack it for you. Pack it yourself before you ask.
