How do I ship a package to a friend?

Shipping a package to a friend takes five steps: confirm the address, pack it well, weigh the packed box, buy a label for the right service, and share the tracking number. Do those in order and most problems never appear.

Why does the address need a second check?

Friends move, change apartments, and use nicknames that do not match a mailbox. A parcel addressed to a first name only, an old apartment, or a building without a unit number can stall at the last step, even if every earlier scan looks perfect. Ask for the address exactly as it appears on their mail, including the postal code, and confirm whether deliveries go to a door, a lobby, a community mailbox, or a pickup point.

Your return address matters just as much. If the parcel cannot be delivered, it needs somewhere to go back to. Put your full name and return address on the label, and do not rely on a phone number alone. Carriers do not routinely call recipients to sort out a bad address; they follow the label, then the return address, then their undeliverable process.

If your friend lives in a condo, a gated community, or a rural area, ask about access. A buzzer code, a building entry note, or a general delivery instruction can be the difference between a first-attempt delivery and a pickup card. You cannot add delivery notes to every label type, so a quick message to your friend, telling them a parcel is coming, often does more than any note field.

How should I pack a personal parcel?

Pack as if the box will be stacked, tipped, and handled by several people. Use a sturdy box with no soft spots, fill empty space so items cannot shift, and wrap fragile items separately so they do not knock against each other. Tape every seam with packing tape, not masking tape or gift tape, and tape the bottom twice if the box is heavy.

Remove old labels and barcodes from a reused box. A leftover barcode can confuse a scanner and send a parcel down the wrong path, or at least slow it down while a worker sorts it by hand. If the box has old markings, cover them fully or use a fresh box. A clean box with one clear label is the fastest box through any system.

For gifts, keep the gift note inside the box, not on the outside. A note on the outside can fall off, get torn, or reveal contents you meant to keep private. If you want the gift to be a surprise, tell your friend a parcel is coming but not what is in it. That way they watch for it without spoiling the reveal, and they know to check a pickup point if a card is left.

What can I not ship to a friend?

Some items are restricted or banned, even between friends. Aerosols, fuels, certain batteries, alcohol, and perishable goods each carry rules that vary by carrier and destination. A bottle of homemade jam, a lithium battery on its own, or a can of spray paint can all be refused or delayed, and a banned item discovered in transit can cause the whole parcel to be held. Check the carrier rules before you pack anything that burns, leaks, or needs refrigeration.

Food gifts need extra care. Chocolate melts in summer, baked goods stale quickly, and anything needing cold storage will not survive a multi-day trip in a plain box. If you send food, pick items that travel well, pack them to survive heat, and send them early in the week so they do not sit over a weekend. Tell your friend the parcel contains food, so it is opened promptly on arrival.

Cash, gift cards, and small valuables deserve a different habit. A parcel label does not make contents invisible, and a lost parcel with cash inside is hard to claim. Use a traceable payment or a digital gift instead, or add signature and coverage if the item truly must travel by post. Keep the receipt and a photo of the packed box until your friend confirms delivery.

How does LetterAgent help with a parcel to a friend?

LetterAgent labels are Canada Post Xpresspost labels, Canada-only, flat-rate, up to 5 kg. The flow is: ask your AI assistant, get a per-label quote, approve the exact price, make a one-time Stripe payment, and receive the label as a PDF. That suits a birthday gift, a care package, or a returned borrowed item, as long as the parcel is within Canada and within the weight limit.

If your friend lives outside Canada, LetterAgent cannot cover that parcel, so say so plainly and use a cross-border service or courier instead. The same applies if the packed box weighs more than 5 kg. The packing and address advice in this guide still applies, whichever label route you use. The label changes; good packing and a confirmed address do not.
