Usually not. Canada Post does not deliver on statutory holidays, and post offices are closed, so a parcel sent just before a holiday waits until the next business day. Some exceptions exist around the December holidays, when limited delivery runs, but a holiday is never a safe day to count on.
The confusion comes from the fact that "holiday" means different things in different places. A day can be a statutory holiday federally, provincially, or only in one province, and Canada Post's schedule follows the federal calendar with provincial wrinkles. A parcel can also keep moving through sorting plants on a holiday even when no carrier is out delivering, which makes tracking look busy while the box sits still.
Canada Post does not deliver on national statutory holidays such as New Year's Day, Good Friday, Canada Day, Labour Day, and Christmas Day. Post offices are closed on those days too, so you cannot drop off a parcel or pick one up either. If a holiday falls on a weekend, the observed day off can shift, so check the current year's schedule rather than assuming the calendar date.
Provincial holidays add another layer. A holiday observed in only one province, such as Family Day in some provinces or St-Jean-Baptiste Day in Quebec, can affect delivery in that province while the rest of the country runs normally. If you are shipping across provinces, check both the sending and receiving province's holidays, since a parcel can be accepted at one end and sit waiting at the other.
| Holiday type | Delivery | Post offices |
|---|---|---|
| National statutory holiday | No delivery | Closed |
| Provincial holiday, receiving province only | May pause in that province | May be closed locally |
| December peak season days | Limited delivery can run on some days | Some locations open extended hours |
| Regular weekend | Limited weekend delivery for some services | Many locations closed Sunday |
Xpresspost is a faster service, but a statutory holiday still pauses it in most cases. Speed comes from priority handling on business days, not from working through holidays. A parcel sent the day before a long weekend will typically be delivered on the next business day after the holiday, not during it. That is worth knowing when you promise a buyer a delivery date: count business days, and skip the holiday in the middle.
The exception is the December peak season, when Canada Post sometimes runs delivery on days it would normally close, to clear the holiday backlog. Those extra delivery days are announced for that year only, so do not plan around them until Canada Post confirms them. The safe habit is to ship early in December and treat any extra delivery day as a bonus.
It waits. Sorting plants may keep processing parcels, and tracking may show a scan, but the final delivery step pauses until carriers are back on route. This is also why tracking can look stuck over a long weekend even though nothing is wrong. If the tracking shows no movement for a few business days after the holiday ends, then it is time to ask questions, not before.
Hold-for-pickup parcels follow the same pause. A parcel waiting at a post office stays there over the holiday, and the hold clock generally does not run out during a closure, though the exact hold period depends on the service. If you are cutting it close on a pickup deadline, collect the parcel before the holiday rather than after.
LetterAgent provides Canada Post Xpresspost shipping labels in Canada, with a flat rate and a 5 kg maximum. You ask your AI assistant, get a per-label quote, approve the exact price, and pay once through Stripe to receive the label PDF. If your parcel must beat a holiday, buy the label and drop the parcel off early, since the label itself cannot move a holiday delivery forward.
