When are Canada Post's 2026 Christmas parcel shipping deadlines?

Canada Post publishes zone-by-zone send-by dates each holiday season: the farther your parcel travels and the slower the service, the earlier your deadline lands. Regular Parcel to a national destination typically has the earliest cutoff, in early December; Xpresspost and Priority within the same city or region can often go within a day or two of Christmas. Check the official 2026 dates on canadapost.ca before you ship.

How do the send-by dates work?

Local (same city)Still well before Christmas, the latest of the economy datesA few days before ChristmasWithin a day or two of Christmas
Regional (same broad region)Around mid-DecemberMid-to-late DecemberA few days before Christmas

Canada Post sets exact dates each year; the pattern above is the shape every season takes, not the official 2026 calendar. Confirm the current year's dates on canadapost.ca before you ship.

What are the three zones?

Local means the parcel stays in your city or its immediate surroundings. Regional covers the broader region around you, roughly within your province or the neighbouring one. National is everything else: Toronto to Vancouver, Halifax to Calgary. The zone matters more than most people expect, because it interacts with the service speed. A Regular Parcel going nationally has to cross the country on ground transport, so its deadline sits in early December, while the same service going across town can ship much later.

What are the four speeds?

From fastest to slowest: Priority, which is the next-business-day product between major centres; Xpresspost, the fast parcel service with an on-time delivery guarantee; Expedited Parcel and the Flat rate box, the economical air-and-ground middle tier (the flat rate box carries up to five kilograms anywhere in Canada for one price); and Regular Parcel, the cheapest ground option with the longest transit. The deadlines run in exactly that order: the slower the service, the earlier you have to hand it over. If you miss the Regular Parcel cutoff, you don't necessarily miss Christmas: you just have to step up to a faster service.

When does the network go quiet?

Christmas Day falls on Friday, December 25, 2026, and Boxing Day on Saturday, December 26, with the observed holiday landing on Monday, December 28 at many locations. There is no collection or delivery on those days, and post offices close. Two details catch people out. First, Canada Post measures its delivery standards from the next business day after deposit, so a parcel dropped in a street box after the last collection time on December 23 counts as deposited on December 24. Second, peak-season volumes can trigger a modification of the on-time delivery guarantee, which means even express services are fast but not promised in late December. Ship a day earlier than the published date and you buy yourself the buffer the guarantee no longer provides.

What can you do after the cutoff?

Miss the published date and the parcel simply travels under normal standards, which may still beat Christmas if the destination is close. Your options: upgrade to Priority or Xpresspost at the counter, which have the latest deadlines of any Canada Post product; drop the parcel at a post office rather than a street box, so it enters the network the same day; or, for a local delivery, hand-deliver it yourself and skip the network entirely. For next year, the cheapest insurance is boring: ship Regular Parcel in the first week of December and forget about deadlines altogether.
