How do I resend a failed fax?

To resend a failed fax, fix the cause first, then resend the whole document unless you know exactly which pages arrived, because a partial resend can leave the receiver with a mixed or duplicated file. Check the number, the line, and the page count, then confirm with the recipient that the full document arrived readable.

What should I check before resending?

Start with the failure itself. A busy signal means the receiving line was in use, and a short wait usually clears it. A no-answer result can mean the number is wrong, the machine is off, or the line is set to voice only. An error partway through often points to a line problem, such as call waiting tones, a weak signal, or a page that jammed in the feeder. Each cause points to a different fix, and resending without fixing it usually fails the same way.

Next, check the number digit by digit against the source, not against your memory of it. A single wrong digit sends the fax to a stranger or to a dead line, and repeated attempts to a wrong number waste time while the real recipient waits. Also check the document: remove blank pages, straighten folded corners, and confirm the page count matches what you intend to send. A page count mismatch is the most common reason a receiver says a fax looks incomplete.

Should I resend the whole document or just the missing pages?

Resend the whole document unless the recipient confirms exactly which pages they have and asks for the rest. That sounds wasteful, but it avoids the classic partial-send trap: the receiver files the first partial fax, then files the second partial fax separately, and nobody has a single complete copy. When you must send only missing pages, label them clearly on a cover sheet, for example pages 4 to 6 of 8, replacing an incomplete earlier fax, and ask the recipient to confirm the combined set.

Also tell the recipient a resend is coming. An unexpected second copy can be filed as a duplicate submission, which in claims, court, or benefits contexts can cause confusion or a rejected duplicate. A short note, resending the full document after a failed first attempt, please file this copy, prevents that. Keep both confirmation pages: the failed attempt and the successful resend together show the timeline if anyone questions when the document arrived.

How do I confirm the full document arrived?

A confirmation page proves your machine sent the pages, not that the receiver can read them or filed them correctly. Call or message the recipient and ask them to confirm the page count and that the last page is present and readable. For long documents, ask them to read back the heading on the final page. If the document is time-sensitive, such as a filing with a deadline, ask for written confirmation, even a brief email, that the complete document arrived by the deadline time.

With LetterAgent, resending follows the same flow: ask your AI assistant, get a per-fax quote with the page count verified, approve the exact total, and pay once through Stripe, for US and Canadian numbers only. Fax is currently in testing, so it is described as available in testing and a fax is never promised to send on a particular day. Verify the number and page count before approving the resend, since those two checks prevent most repeat failures.
