Home > Guides > Replace a Lost Car Title
Request a duplicate title from your state's motor vehicle agency with a written application, a copy of your ID, and the fee paid by check or money order. The original title is voided the moment the duplicate is issued. Mail the application certified so you have proof it was received.
| What to include | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| The agency's duplicate-title application form | Each state has its own form; most are downloadable from the DMV site |
| A photocopy of your photo ID | Proves you're the registered owner; send a copy, never the original |
| The VIN, year, make, and model | Lets the agency pull the exact record if the title number is unknown |
| Payment by check or money order | Never mail cash; fees are set by the state and listed on the form |
| Odometer disclosure, if the state requires it | Some states require the mileage reading on the duplicate application |
Only the registered owner named on the title, or a lienholder, can request it. If there's an active loan, the lienholder may hold the title rights and some states send the duplicate directly to the lender rather than to you. If the vehicle is jointly owned, most states require all owners to sign the application. A co-owner, spouse, or family member cannot request it on your behalf without a power of attorney.
It becomes worthless. The moment the agency issues the duplicate, the original title number is voided in the state's system. A buyer checking the old title number would see it flagged, and transferring ownership with a voided title can trigger a fraud review. If you find the lost title after the duplicate arrives, destroy it. This is also why you should report the loss promptly: a lost title in the wrong hands can be altered or used as the basis for title fraud.
Expect several weeks from the day the agency receives it, longer during busy periods. This is one area where the mail method has a real trade-off: many states offer same-day or same-week duplicate titles for in-person visits, while mailed applications go through a processing queue. If you need to sell the car or register it soon, weigh that wait against a trip to the DMV office. Whatever route you pick, certified mail gives you a dated receipt proving when your application arrived, which matters if a deadline is involved.
