Can I get a refund if my package arrives late?

Sometimes. UPS and FedEx back their time-definite services with money-back guarantees, and Canada Post Xpresspost carries an on-time guarantee too. Economy services have no guarantee at all, and the refund always goes to whoever paid for the shipping, claimed by a deadline.

What does a money-back guarantee actually cover?

It covers the shipping charges, not the consequences of the delay. If your overnight document arrives a day late and you miss a deal, the carrier refunds the cost of shipping that parcel, nothing more. Consequential losses are excluded in every carrier's terms, which is why nobody should ship truly irreplaceable deadlines by parcel at all. The guarantee is a rebate on the shipping fee, not insurance on your plans.

It also only applies when the carrier missed its own committed date. If the parcel was delayed because the address was wrong, the recipient refused it, or a customs hold stopped it, that is not the carrier's miss. Weather and natural-disaster exceptions apply too. When you file, the carrier checks its scans against its commitment; you do not need to argue, the tracking record decides.

Who gets the refund: sender or recipient?

The sender. Or more precisely, whoever paid for the shipping. This surprises recipients constantly. If a store ships you something late, you cannot claim the carrier guarantee yourself; only the store can, because the store was the carrier's customer. Your remedy as a buyer is with the store, under its own shipping promises or consumer-protection rules.

The flip side helps small sellers. If you bought a shipping label online and the parcel arrived late on a guaranteed service, you are the shipper and you can claim. Keep the tracking number and note the committed delivery date shown at purchase. Some claim windows are short, so file as soon as the lateness is clear rather than waiting weeks.

How do I file a late-delivery claim?

The non-obvious catch with UPS and FedEx: the claim is usually filed by the account that paid. If you bought the label through a reseller or marketplace (eBay labels, Amazon Buy Shipping), the refund path may run through that platform's claim process instead of the carrier's. Check who issued your label.

What if my service has no guarantee?

Then a refund for lateness is not on the table, but that does not mean silence is your only option. If the parcel is genuinely lost or severely delayed, file a missing-mail search (USPS) or a trace (Canada Post, UPS, FedEx). If the parcel contained something valuable, the separate shipping insurance or declared value is what covers loss, and that claim is distinct from any lateness claim. A good rule of thumb: buy the guaranteed service when the date matters, and buy declared value when the contents matter. They solve different problems.
