Can I receive mail at an Airbnb?

Generally, no. A short-term rental does not come with mailbox rights, and a host is not set up to receive and sort mail for a stream of guests. Mail addressed to you at a rental can be refused, returned to sender, or lost in the shuffle. For longer stays, workarounds exist that are more reliable than hoping the host checks the mailbox.

Why doesn't it work?

Mail carriers deliver to names on the mailbox and addresses on their route records, and a guest's name appears on neither. If the host's mailbox does not list you, the carrier may treat your mail as misaddressed and return it. Some hosts do collect mail as a courtesy, but that is a favor, not a service: they are not responsible if your tax document sits under a pile of junk mail for three weeks. There is also a liability angle, since hosts do not want to become custodians of a stranger's mail.

What is General Delivery?

USPS General Delivery is the classic solution and it is free. Address your mail as "Your Name, General Delivery, City, State, ZIP" to the post office nearest your stay, and the office holds it for pickup. Call the post office first to confirm it accepts General Delivery; not every station does. Bring photo ID matching the name on the mail, and note that offices typically hold items for about 30 days before returning them.

What works for longer stays?

If you will be in one place for a month or more, consider these:

Stay lengthBest option
A few daysTime your orders to arrive before you leave; use hold-for-pickup lockers
Two to four weeksUSPS General Delivery at the nearest post office
One to three monthsPremium Forwarding Service or an agreement with the host
Traveling indefinitelyVirtual mailbox with forwarding

Should I change my address to the rental?

Do not file a change-of-address to a short-term rental. The forwarding order stays on file for months after you leave, so mail sent to your old address will keep arriving at the Airbnb long after you are gone, landing in a stranger's mailbox. If you must receive something important during a short stay, General Delivery avoids the forwarding trap entirely because no address change is involved.
