Home > Guides > Same-ZIP-code move
Yes, file one. A USPS change of address follows your street address, not your ZIP code, so moving across the street or to another floor of the same building still counts as a move. Without it, your mail keeps going to the old address. Forwarding works the same whether you move two blocks or far.
Because a ZIP code is a sorting region, not a delivery point. Thousands of addresses share one ZIP, and the carrier sorts by street, number, and apartment, not by the five digits. When you file a change of address, USPS records your old street address and your new street address; the ZIP fields just come along for the ride. A move from 412 Elm to 880 Elm in the same ZIP is as much a move, to the sorting machines, as a move across the country.
This trips people up most in same-building moves. You switch from apartment 3B to 5A, the ZIP never changes, and it feels like nothing happened. But the carrier's case still has your old unit on the label, and mail addressed to 3B will be delivered to 3B, to whoever lives there now. File the change.
| Mail type | Forwarded? |
|---|---|
| First-Class Mail, Priority Mail, periodicals | Yes, piece by piece, for 12 months |
| Packages (Priority, Ground Advantage) | Yes |
| Marketing mail and catalogs | Generally no; these are usually discarded, not forwarded |
| After the 12 months end | Mail is returned to sender for another 6 months, with your new address printed on the label |
That last row is the quiet safety net. Even after forwarding expires, senders get your new address handed back to them on the returned envelope, which is how stragglers like annual tax forms eventually find you. It is not a substitute for updating your address with banks and agencies, but it catches the ones you forgot.
Online at USPS.com or in person at any post office. Online filing asks for a credit or debit card to verify your identity, with a small verification charge; in-person filing uses photo ID instead. Choose individual, family, or business, and enter the exact old and new addresses. The change can start on a future date, so file before moving day and set the start date for the day you take the keys.
If you will be back within a year, say a same-ZIP move to a short-term rental during renovations, you have two plays. A standard change of address still works and you can cancel it when you return. Or, if you want your address on record to stay put, Premium Forwarding Service bundles your mail weekly to the temporary address instead. Same ZIP, different mechanism: one changes your address, the other just reroutes the mail.
