What do USPS tracking statuses mean?

USPS tracking statuses describe the last scan on your item, not a live GPS position. "In transit" means it's moving between facilities, "out for delivery" means it's on today's truck, and "delivered" means the carrier scanned it at the stop. The most misunderstood is "awaiting receipt": the label exists, but USPS doesn't have the item yet.

StatusWhat it really means
Awaiting receipt / pre-shipmentA shipping label was created, but USPS has never scanned the item: it may not have been dropped off yet
AcceptedUSPS took possession at the counter or pickup point; the journey has officially started
In transitMoving between facilities; scans happen only at handoff points, so silence between scans is normal
Arrived at / departed facilityThe item passed through a sorting plant; the timestamps show its progress through the network
Out for deliveryLoaded on the carrier's truck for today's route; it should arrive today, but routes get interrupted
Notice leftDelivery needed a signature and nobody was there; the item is being held for pickup
DeliveredThe carrier scanned it at the delivery point; this is a scan event, not proof of what's in your mailbox
Available for pickupHeld at the post office, usually after a notice; bring ID to collect it

Why does "in transit" sometimes sit for days?

Because scans only happen at facilities, not on the road between them. A truck driving across the country generates no scans; the next update appears when the item hits the next sorting plant. Long gaps are normal on cross-country legs and during holiday volume. "In transit" is the system saying "it's somewhere in the network and nothing has gone wrong that we know of." Worry only if the expected window passes with no movement, not because the status hasn't changed today.

What does "delivered" actually guarantee?

Less than people assume. The delivered scan records that the carrier scanned the barcode at the delivery stop; it doesn't photograph your doorstep or confirm which box it went into. Premature scans happen, misdeliveries happen, and the scan can't tell the difference. If tracking says delivered and you don't have it, treat the scan as a lead, not a verdict: check the property, ask around, and call the local post office, where a supervisor can see the GPS location logged with the scan.

Why do statuses sometimes go backwards?

Seeing "out for delivery" flip back to "in transit" feels alarming, but it usually means the item missed the truck or got missorted at the plant and is riding the next one. Statuses describe scans, and scans describe where the item was, not a promise about where it's going. Give it a day before you start worrying.
