Can I cancel a gym membership by mailing a letter?

Yes. A mailed cancellation letter works at most gyms, and it gives you dated proof that many gyms require. Follow the notice period in your contract, send it by tracked mail, and keep the receipt with your copy.

ItemWhat to checkWhere to find it
Notice periodHow many days ahead you must cancelYour membership agreement
Minimum termWhether you are still inside a fixed termYour signup contract
Cancellation addressThe exact address for written cancellationsGym website, contract, or front desk
Early feeWhether ending early triggers a feeContract cancellation clause
Payment methodCard or bank account the gym chargesYour billing statement

Why does a letter work better than just asking at the desk?

A verbal cancellation leaves you with nothing to show if billing continues. Desk staff change, notes get lost, and "I told someone" is hard to prove to a billing department weeks later. A mailed letter with tracking creates a dated record of what you asked for and when the gym received it. That record is what turns a billing dispute from your word against theirs into a document you can point to.

Some gym contracts actually require written notice and name a specific address for it. Sending the letter to the wrong address, like a single club location when the contract names a head office, can stall the cancellation. Read the cancellation clause before you mail anything, and send it exactly where the contract says.

What does the notice period mean in practice?

Most gym contracts require notice ahead of your next billing date, often thirty days. That means your membership usually runs until the end of the notice period, and one more payment may still come out after you mail the letter. Count from the date the gym receives the letter, not the date you wrote it, which is another reason tracked mail helps: the delivery date is on record.

Watch for contracts that renew month to month after an initial term. If you are past the minimum term, you can usually cancel at the end of any billing cycle with proper notice. If you are still inside a fixed term, the gym may charge an early cancellation fee or hold you to the term, unless a contract exception applies, such as a move beyond a set distance or a medical reason with documentation. Some states and provinces also set consumer rules for gym cancellations that override contract terms, so check local rules if the gym pushes back.

What should the letter include?

Keep it plain and complete. The gym needs to find your account fast and act without writing back for missing details.

Do not include your full card number or bank details. The gym already has them, and a letter does not need them to cancel.

What if billing continues after I cancel?

First, check the dates. A payment inside the notice period is usually legitimate. A payment after the confirmed effective date is not. Contact the gym in writing again, attach a copy of your first letter and the delivery proof, and ask for a refund of the extra charges. If the gym will not fix it, dispute the charge with your bank or card issuer, using the same documents. Keep every letter, receipt, and reply together, since card disputes often turn on who has the paper trail.

Also check whether the gym sold your contract to a billing company. Some gyms use a third party for payments, and the cancellation must reach that company too. If your statements show a billing company name, send that company a copy of the cancellation letter as well.

Can LetterAgent mail this letter for me?

Yes, for a recipient with a US or Canadian address. Describe the cancellation letter to your AI assistant, approve the exact quoted price, and it is printed and mailed. Choose the certified or registered option so you hold proof the gym received it.
