I lost my certified mail receipt. Can I still prove I mailed it?

Yes, usually. The white receipt with the tracking number is your best proof, but it is not your only proof. USPS records every scan of a certified mail piece on its own systems, and if you kept the tracking number (or can recover it), the electronic record on usps.com works as backup evidence of mailing and delivery.

First: which piece did you lose?

Certified mail involves three different paper items, and people mix them up:

What can the tracking number recover for you?

If you have the tracking number anywhere, a photo of the receipt, the number in a USPS tracking text or email alert, or your Click-N-Ship history if you printed the label online, you are in good shape. Enter it at usps.com: the scan history shows acceptance, in-transit, and delivery events. Print or save that page. Courts, agencies, and landlords routinely accept the electronic tracking record as proof of mailing, especially alongside your own copy of the letter.

What if the tracking number is gone too?

That is harder. USPS can search its records, but without the tracking number the search is slow and not guaranteed. If you mailed it at a post office counter, the office may have the acceptance record tied to the date and destination, so call or visit the office where you mailed it. If you bought the label through an online postage service, log in and pull your mailing history: the tracking number is almost always stored there. This is also why photographing the receipt at the counter takes ten seconds and saves you real pain later.

What you still haveYour backup proof
Tracking number onlyusps.com scan history (acceptance and delivery events)
Photo of the receiptSame as the receipt for most purposes
Return Receipt green cardProof of delivery, but not proof of mailing date by itself
Nothing at allPost office acceptance records, if the counter clerk can find them

Does electronic proof beat the green card?

For most purposes, yes. The electronic Return Receipt option, which you can buy instead of the physical green card, delivers the same signature confirmation as a PDF through USPS systems. It cannot be lost in your desk drawer. The physical green card is still useful in courtrooms and agencies that prefer paper, but it is slow: it travels back to you through the mail, which can take a week or more after delivery.

What about Canada?

Canada Post's registered mail works similarly: the receipt with the tracking number is the primary proof, and the online tracking record is the backup. If you lose the receipt, the tracking number alone gives you the full event history on canadapost.ca. Canada Post also offers signature confirmation and proof-of-delivery records that live in their system regardless of your paperwork.
