Most U.S. post offices keep their retail counters open on Saturday mornings with reduced hours, while many close entirely. Sundays they are closed. Canada Post's corporate retail offices are typically closed on weekends, though private outlets inside stores like Shoppers Drug Mart follow the host store's hours, so Saturday drop-offs are often still possible.
| Where | Saturday | Sunday | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| U.S. post office retail counter | Often open, reduced morning hours | Closed | Varies by location; always check your branch's hours online first |
| USPS self-service kiosk / PO box lobby | Usually accessible | Usually accessible | Many lobbies stay open 24/7 even when the counter is closed |
| Canada Post corporate office | Usually closed | Closed | Some urban locations may differ; check the location finder |
| Canada Post private outlet (in a store) | Open with the host store | Open with the host store | Shoppers Drug Mart and pharmacy outlets often have weekend hours |
| Street letterboxes / collection boxes | Available | Available | Check the pickup time posted on the box; weekend pickups may be earlier or none |
Most are, but only in the morning. Typical Saturday retail hours run something like 9 a.m. to noon or 1 p.m., and smaller rural branches sometimes skip Saturday entirely. Delivery still runs on Saturday: carriers are out, and mail arrives. The thing that stops on Saturday is the counter service you might want: certified mail, passport applications, money orders, and package services that need a clerk.
The workaround most people miss is the self-service kiosk. Larger post offices have automated kiosks in the lobby that sell postage, print shipping labels, and accept packages, and the lobby is often accessible around the clock. For a stamped letter, a street collection box works any day of the week. Just read the pickup schedule printed on the box: Saturday collection is often earlier than weekday, and Sunday collection may not exist at all, which means a Sunday drop sits until Monday's pickup.
Canada Post's own corporate retail offices are generally closed on Saturdays and Sundays. But Canada has a much bigger network of private outlets: postal counters inside Shoppers Drug Mart stores, pharmacies, and convenience stores. These follow the host store's hours, and many are open Saturday and even Sunday. If you need to mail a parcel or buy stamps on the weekend, the private outlet in a nearby store is usually your answer.
Letterboxes on the street work the same as in the U.S.: drop your stamped letter any time, but check the posted collection schedule. Canada Post also runs weekend parcel delivery in the Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal metro areas as part of its modernization program, so parcels can move on Saturdays even when the counters are shut.
You have three fallbacks. First, collection boxes and kiosks never close. A stamped, addressed letter dropped in a box on Saturday morning usually makes Saturday's pickup. Second, private outlets and office-supply stores (Staples, UPS Store locations) can handle parcels and postage on weekends. Third, skip the trip entirely: services like LetterAgent let you describe the letter to your AI assistant and have it printed and mailed, so Saturday never matters. You approve the exact quoted price once, and the letter goes out through the normal postal network.
One timing note: nothing mailed on a weekend moves until Monday. Weekend drops sit in collection, and "mailed on Saturday" really means "first processed on Monday." If your letter has a deadline, that lost weekend counts, so treat Friday afternoon as the real cutoff for anything urgent.
