How do I mail a letter without going to the post office?

Most letters never need a post office. A stamped letter can go into any blue collection box, your own mailbox with the flag up, or straight into your carrier's hands, or an online service can print and mail it for you. The post office is for passports, money orders, and some packages: not ordinary letters.

Where can I drop off a letter if not at the post office?

You have more options than you probably think:

Blue collection boxes (US). The familiar blue boxes on streets, outside post offices, and at many stores. Check the pickup time posted on the box: mail dropped after the last pickup waits until the next collection day.
Your own mailbox. Leave the stamped letter inside and raise the red flag. That flag exists specifically to signal outgoing mail: when it's up, your carrier knows to stop and collect what's inside.
Hand it to your carrier. During normal delivery, you can simply hand over outgoing letters. No scheduling, no box hunt.
Schedule a free carrier pickup (US). USPS lets you request a pickup on usps.com: the carrier collects your outgoing mail on their normal round, at no charge.
Community mailbox outgoing slots (Canada). If your mail comes to a community mailbox, there's a dedicated slot for outgoing letters: no post office involved.

What do I actually still need the post office for?

Registered or certified mail	No: available through online mailing services, or hand it to your carrier

One thing that surprises Americans visiting Canada: most Canadian "post offices" aren't standalone buildings at all. They're counters inside drugstores, convenience stores, and other retailers, so the dreaded "trip to the post office" is often just a trip to the pharmacy. Canadians, meanwhile, are often surprised that US post offices are their own dedicated buildings with their own parking lots.

How does online mailing replace the trip entirely?
