USPS Ground Advantage vs Priority Mail: which should I pick?

These are both US-only USPS services, and LetterAgent's shipping labels are Canada-only flat-rate Xpresspost: this guide is general knowledge, not a choice you make through LetterAgent. Ground Advantage is the cheaper option for parcels under 70 pounds. Priority Mail costs more but includes free packaging, faster delivery, and flat-rate boxes that beat Ground Advantage on long-distance shipments.

When does Ground Advantage win?

Most of the time for ordinary parcels. Ground Advantage replaced USPS's old Parcel Select and First-Class Package services, so it is the default economical choice for anything from a padded mailer of phone cases to a mid-size box of books. It covers up to 70 pounds, which surprises people who assume "ground" means small. The pricing is weight- and distance-based, so a short hop across the state stays cheap. If you are a small seller shipping light items and your customers are not paying for speed, Ground Advantage is usually the right answer and there is little reason to look further.

When does Priority Mail beat it?

Two situations flip the math. First, distance: Priority Mail's flat-rate boxes charge one price regardless of zone, so a heavy box going coast to coast can cost less by flat rate than the same box priced by weight and distance under Ground Advantage. Second, the packaging itself: USPS gives away Priority Mail boxes, padded envelopes, and tubes for free (order them online or pick them up at the post office). If you were going to buy a box anyway, free packaging narrows or erases Ground Advantage's price edge on small shipments. Priority is also the faster service by design, and it includes a higher amount of insurance at no extra charge.

What can only go by ground?

Hazardous materials with ground-only restrictions. The classic example is certain lithium battery shipments and ORM-D consumer commodities like aerosols: these can travel by ground transport but are barred from air, which rules out Priority Mail on routes where it would fly. This is the non-obvious one: people assume Priority is simply the better service, but for a restricted item Ground Advantage (or another ground service) is not the cheaper option, it is the only option. USPS publishes a list of mailable hazardous materials with their transport restrictions, and the restrictions follow the item, not the service: misdeclaring to get a faster label is a federal matter, not a customer-service dispute.

What about delivery speed claims?

Treat both services' delivery estimates as planning numbers, not promises. Ground Advantage typically moves in a few business days, Priority in fewer, but neither is a guaranteed service the way Priority Mail Express is. Weather, volume surges, and handoffs between facilities all stretch estimates. If the date truly matters (a birthday, a filing deadline), neither of these is the right service: use Express or ship earlier. And since these services are US-only, Canadian readers comparing options should look at Canada Post's own lineup (Regular Parcel vs Xpresspost vs Priority) instead.
