How do I find a company's mailing address?

Start with the company's contact page, then check the address it gives for correspondence, because the headquarters address and the address that receives mail are often different. If the contact page gives no mailing address, work outward: the company's SEC filings, its state business registration, and a direct phone call, in that order.

Why is the headquarters address sometimes wrong?

Big companies route mail through processing centers that have nothing to do with where the executives sit. A letter to "headquarters" lands in a general mailroom and gets sorted by hand; a letter to the published correspondence address goes straight to the department that opens that kind of mail. Customer complaints, legal notices, and partnership inquiries each have their own destination. When a contact page lists a separate address for media, legal, or customer service, use it: that specificity is the difference between a same-week reply and a letter that circulates internally for a month.

What about registered agents and legal mail?

Every state's business registry shows a registered agent: the person or company authorized to receive legal papers on the business's behalf. That address is public and easy to find, but it is for service of process, not general correspondence. Sending a sales pitch or a complaint to the registered agent means it goes to a law firm or a filing service, where it will be treated as what it is: misdirected. Use the registered agent address only for legal notices. For everything else, find the address the company itself publishes for mail.

How do I verify an address before mailing something important?

Three checks, in order. First, confirm the address appears on the company's own website, not just on a directory or review site: third-party listings go stale. Second, confirm it is a mailing address, not a street address. A street address tells you where the building is; a mailing address tells you where the letter goes. Third, for anything with legal weight, call and confirm: a two-minute phone call beats a returned letter by two weeks. Ask for the department or attention line while you have them on the phone.

What if the company seems to have no mailing address at all?

Some online-only businesses publish no postal address, which is legal in most cases but tells you something about how they handle paper mail. Try their investor-relations page (public companies must disclose), the copyright or DMCA agent listing (required on US sites), or the terms-of-service page, which sometimes includes a notice address. If none of those yield anything, the registered agent address from the state registry is your fallback for formal matters. And if a company is completely unreachable by mail, treat that as information: a business with no published address is a business you may not want to send money to.
