Yes. Most hotels will fax for you through the front desk, and larger ones have a business center with a self-serve machine. Expect a per-page fee charged to your room, ask for the confirmation page, and have the recipient's fax number ready with the country code if it is international.
| Option | How it works | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Front desk faxing | Hand your pages to the front desk staff; they fax them and charge your room | Staff see every page; avoid medical or financial documents |
| Business center machine | Self-serve copier/fax in the business center; you dial and send yourself | May be closed overnight; check the hours before you need it urgently |
| Online fax from your phone | Snap or upload the pages and send through a fax app or service | Needs a decent scan: hotel lighting and wrinkled paper make poor images |
Almost every hotel charges for faxing, and the fee is usually per page. Front-desk faxing typically costs more per page than the self-serve business center machine, because staff time is involved. The charge lands on your room bill. Ask the price before you hand over the pages: a ten-page document at a per-page fee can surprise you, and front-desk staff will tell you the rate if you ask. If the pages are already digital (a PDF on your phone), sending them yourself through an online fax service is usually cheaper and keeps the document private.
International faxes cost more, sometimes much more. Hotel phone systems add their own surcharge to international dialing, and a fax is a phone call. If you are faxing from a US hotel to a number abroad, you will dial the international exit code (011 from the US), then the country code, then the number. Double-check the full number with the recipient first: a misdialed international fax is an expensive mistake, because you pay for the call whether it reaches the right machine or not.
This is the step people skip, and it is the one that matters most. A fax confirmation page is the machine's printed receipt: it shows the recipient's number, the time, how many pages went through, and whether the transmission succeeded. If the fax is for anything with a deadline (an insurance form, a legal document, a job application), the confirmation page is your proof that you sent it on time.
At the front desk, ask specifically: "Can I get the confirmation page for that fax?" Staff sometimes toss it unless you ask, and once it is gone you cannot recreate it. In a self-serve business center, the machine usually prints the confirmation automatically after a successful send; wait for it before you walk away. If you use an online fax service, the confirmation arrives by email or in the app: save it with the document it relates to.
This happens more than it used to. Many hotels, especially newer or budget ones, have quietly retired their fax machines: the business center is now just a printer and a couple of computers. Call or ask at check-in rather than discovering this at 11 PM when a deadline looms. If there is no machine, you still have options: nearby office-supply stores and shipping centers (Staples, FedEx Office, UPS Store locations) have self-serve fax machines, usually open late, and an online fax service sends straight from your phone with no machine at all.
Two privacy notes worth remembering. First, anyone faxing through the front desk should assume staff can see the contents: do not fax tax returns, medical records, or anything with account numbers through a person. Second, hotel business center computers are shared machines. If you log into anything to retrieve a document, log back out, and do not leave copies of your document on the desktop or in the print queue.
If you would rather skip the hunt entirely, you can fax without touching a hotel machine. Describe the fax to your AI assistant, approve the quoted total with the page count verified, and it is sent from your phone. LetterAgent's fax service is currently in testing and covers US and Canadian fax numbers, so it fits the common case of faxing a document back home while you travel.
