Can I fax a handwritten document?

Yes, you can fax a handwritten document, and it will arrive readable if the writing is dark, large, and well spaced, but fax machines only send black and white, so faint pencil, light ink, and cramped handwriting often come out broken or blank. If the document must be exact, such as a signed form, retyping the body and hand-signing it usually gives a cleaner result.

What makes handwriting survive a fax?

A fax scanner reads contrast, not colour. Dark black ink on plain white paper gives the strongest signal, while blue ink, pencil, and highlighter often fade to grey or vanish. Large lettering helps more than neat lettering: letters about a quarter inch tall survive the scan far better than small, tight script, because the fax process thickens and merges fine strokes. Wide spacing between lines matters too, since lines that touch in the original can merge into a solid band on the receiving copy.

Paper choice matters as well. Lined notebook paper with ruled lines and edge marks adds clutter that the scanner picks up, and lined paper can make handwriting harder to read on the far end. Plain white paper, a dark pen, and no shading or highlighting give the cleanest result. If the original is on coloured or thin paper, photocopying it onto white paper first often improves the fax.

When should I retype instead?

Retype when the document will be filed, quoted, or searched later. A faxed handwritten page arrives as an image, not as text, so the receiver cannot search it, copy a paragraph from it, or run it through a screen reader. Forms with boxes, checkmarks, and small fields are a special case: handwriting that spills outside a box can be misread, and a checked box that is only half filled may look empty after faxing. In those cases, type the content, print it, and sign by hand in ink.

Also retype when the handwriting itself is the problem: cursive that only you can read, medical or technical terms with unusual spellings, or numbers where a misread digit changes the meaning. A misread account number or dosage on a faxed handwritten note is not a minor flaw; it is a wrong record. If you must fax handwriting, read the received copy back with the recipient when the stakes are high, or send a typed version as a follow-up and ask which copy they will file.

How do I check the fax arrived readable?

Ask the recipient to confirm they can read every page, not just that pages arrived. A confirmation page proves transmission, not legibility: it says the machine sent the pages, not that the writing survived. For important handwritten documents, call or message after sending and ask the recipient to read back a key line, such as a name or a number. If any page is unclear, resend only that page rather than the whole document, and note on the cover sheet which pages are replacements.

For LetterAgent faxing, the same rules apply: you ask your AI assistant, get a per-fax quote with the page count verified, approve the exact total, and pay once through Stripe, for US and Canadian numbers only. Fax is currently in testing, so it is described as available in testing and a fax is never promised to send on a particular day. Scan or photograph the handwritten pages in good light before sending, so you have a clear copy if a resend is needed.
