No, not directly: Gmail has no fax feature and no fax button. The only way to fax from an email account is through an online fax service that gives you a special send address, something like 15551234567@theirfaxservice.com, and converts the email you send there into a fax. That is a feature of the fax service, not of Gmail itself.
Email and fax are different networks. Gmail speaks the internet's email protocols; a fax machine expects a phone call carrying an audio signal. No email provider can place that call, because email software has no connection to the phone network. This is why every "fax from Gmail" tutorial quietly starts with "first, sign up for an online fax service." The service is the part doing the faxing. Gmail is just the envelope you hand the document to the service in.
| Step | What happens |
|---|---|
| 1. Sign up | You create an account with an online fax service and get a send address |
| 2. Compose | You write a normal email in Gmail to that special address |
| 3. Attach | You attach the document (PDF works best); the body of the email often becomes the cover page |
| 4. Send | The service converts the attachment to fax format and dials the destination number |
| 5. Confirm | The service emails you a delivery report, the online equivalent of a confirmation page |
Several, and they are worth knowing before you route anything sensitive through email. First, the number the recipient sees is the service's caller ID, not yours, so put your own callback number on the cover sheet or the recipient cannot fax you back. Second, your document now exists in two inboxes: your Gmail sent mail and the service's system, which doubles the exposure if the content is sensitive. Third, a typo in the send address, one wrong digit in 15551234567@theirfaxservice.com, sends your full document to a stranger's fax machine with no undo and usually no bounce. Finally, many services take the email's subject line and body and turn them into the cover page automatically, which surprises people who wrote something casual in the email body and find it printed on the recipient's desk.
If the goal is just "get this fax sent," skipping email entirely is simpler. Describe the fax to your AI assistant through LetterAgent: you get a per-fax quote with the page count verified, you approve the exact total, you pay once, and it is sent to a US or Canadian fax number. No special send address to memorize, no signup, no subscription. The flow is outbound only, and fax is in private testing right now. For one-off faxes, that is usually less setup than an email-to-fax account you will use twice and forget to cancel.
Ready to fax it? Fax with LetterAgent: describe it to your AI assistant, approve the exact quoted price, and it is sent.
