How do eBay shipping labels work?

eBay lets sellers buy discounted postage inside the order flow: after an item sells, you enter the parcel weight and dimensions, pick a carrier service, and eBay generates a label with tracking that uploads to the order automatically. The label cost comes out of your seller payout. It is cheaper than counter postage and keeps everything in one place.

A note on scope: LetterAgent sells Canada-only flat-rate Xpresspost labels through your AI assistant; we are not integrated with eBay and cannot generate eBay labels. This guide is general seller knowledge.

Why are eBay labels cheaper than the post office counter?

Volume. eBay negotiates commercial carrier rates on behalf of all its sellers and passes a discount through the label flow, so the same parcel costs less bought inside eBay than bought at the counter with no account. The discount is deepest on the services eBay pushes hardest, and it applies automatically: there is nothing to sign up for and no volume threshold for an individual seller.

The second saving is operational. Because tracking uploads to the order the moment you buy the label, you skip the manual step of copying a tracking number into eBay, and the buyer gets tracking without you doing anything. For sellers shipping dozens of orders a week, that automation is worth as much as the postage discount.

What if I make a mistake on the label?

Void it from the order page and buy a corrected one, as long as the parcel has not entered the carrier's system. eBay's flow supports reprinting (for printer jams and smudged barcodes) and voiding (for wrong addresses or weights) without leaving the order. The void window is limited, usually a matter of days, and the refund goes back through your eBay balance rather than to a card.

Weight mistakes deserve special attention. If you understate the weight, the carrier can bill eBay for the difference, and that adjustment lands on your account after the fact. A cheap kitchen scale pays for itself the first time it prevents a postage adjustment: weigh the packed, sealed parcel, not the item alone, because packaging counts.

How do eBay labels handle combined shipping and international orders?

When a buyer wins multiple items from you, eBay can combine them into one order with one label, which usually costs less than shipping each item separately and halves your packing work. Set up combined-shipping rules in your seller settings before you need them; doing it per order at label time is slower and error-prone.

For international sales, eBay's label flow generates the customs documentation alongside the label, pulling the item details from the listing. Review the customs fields before printing: the listing title is not always a good customs description, and vague descriptions are what get parcels held at borders. In Canada, cross-border eBay sales also mean thinking about who pays brokerage and duties on the buyer's end, which is worth stating clearly in the listing.

Do I have to use eBay's labels?

No. You can buy postage anywhere and paste the tracking number into the order manually. Some sellers prefer their own carrier accounts or a postage platform for consistency across marketplaces. The trade is the discount and the automation: leaving eBay's flow usually means paying more per label and doing more clicks per order. Most small sellers stay in the flow; high-volume sellers with negotiated carrier rates of their own sometimes do better outside it.
