Can I drop off a USPS package at a UPS Store?

Many UPS Stores accept USPS parcels as a convenience, but they cannot scan USPS tracking into the postal system, so you get no real proof of drop-off. The reverse never works: no USPS location accepts UPS or FedEx parcels. Take it to the right carrier when the label matters.

What actually happens when you hand a USPS parcel to a UPS Store?

UPS Stores are franchises, so the honest answer starts with "it depends on the store." Many of them accept USPS parcels as a customer service: they hold your package and either hand it to a visiting mail carrier or drive it to a post office themselves, sometimes for a small handling fee. Nothing about this is standardized. One store does it happily, the next one refuses, and corporate UPS has no official policy blessing the practice.

The part that matters: their scanners cannot produce an official USPS acceptance scan. When you hand a USPS parcel to the post office counter, the tracking page shows "acceptance" almost immediately, and that scan is your proof the carrier has the parcel. Hand the same parcel to a UPS Store and your tracking stays silent until the parcel physically reaches the post office, hours or a day later. If the parcel disappears in between, you have no receipt from the carrier that is actually responsible for it.

When is that risk acceptable?

For low-stakes parcels where timing does not matter, the convenience can be worth it. For anything where you need to prove you mailed it, it is not. Think of the situations where the acceptance scan matters: a tax filing with a deadline, a return with a cutoff date, a payment, an eBay sale where the buyer can claim non-shipment. In those cases, the detour through a UPS Store adds a gap where nothing is trackable. The post office counter, a blue collection box, or your own carrier's pickup gives you the first real scan right away.

Drop-offWhat each carrier actually acceptsDo you get an official acceptance scan?
USPS parcel at a UPS StoreOften accepted as a courtesy (varies by store); sometimes a small feeNo; tracking starts only when it reaches a post office
USPS parcel at a FedEx OfficeSometimes accepted as a courtesy, same caveatNo

FedEx parcel at a post officeNever acceptedNot applicable
USPS parcel at a post office or blue boxAlwaysYes, at the counter; near-immediate on pickup for carrier pickups

What about the return-label situation at big retailers?

There is one common exception people run into. Many retailers give you a choice of return label: USPS or UPS. If you pick the UPS return label, you must drop it at a UPS location. If you pick USPS, drop it at USPS. The mistake people make is printing one and dropping it at the other. A USPS return label dropped at a UPS Store follows the same unofficial path above, and a UPS return label dropped in a blue box simply sits there until someone notices. Match the label to the carrier. Always.

How does this work in Canada?

Canada is simpler because the retail footprints overlap more. Canada Post outlets inside pharmacies, convenience stores, and big-box retailers are official Canada Post acceptance points: you get a real acceptance scan and a receipt. But those same outlets will not accept a UPS, FedEx, or Purolator parcel. Couriers have their own drop-off networks: UPS drop boxes and authorized shipping outlets, FedEx drop boxes, Purolator depots. Same rule, both countries: the label tells you where the parcel goes, and the carrier that issued the label is the only one that gives you proof it received it.

A LetterAgent shipping label is a Canada Post Xpresspost label, so any Canada Post outlet or retail counter is the right drop-off, with a proper scan and receipt at the moment you hand it over.
