Does a USPS change of address update the IRS?

No. A USPS change of address only reroutes your mail: it forwards First-Class letters to your new address for about a year but sends no update to the IRS or any other agency. The IRS learns your new address from your next tax return or from Form 8822, the form built specifically for telling the IRS you moved. File it separately from your USPS forwarding.

This is general information, not tax advice.

What a USPS change of address does and doesn't do:

Why doesn't forwarding update anyone?

Forwarding is a mail-routing service, not an identity service. USPS never promised to broadcast your move; the system exists so your letters find you while you tell everyone yourself. No data feed carries your new address from USPS to the IRS or to any other agency. The one thing people confuse it with is the National Change of Address database, a licensed dataset USPS sells to bulk mailers so they can update their own mailing lists. That is a commercial product for junk-mail hygiene, not a government notification. Your bank's marketing department may learn your new address from it. The IRS does not work that way.

How do you actually tell the IRS?

File Form 8822, Change of Address, which exists for exactly this one job. Mail it to the IRS address shown in the form's instructions for your state; there is no online equivalent, and a phone call doesn't update the record either. Your next filed tax return also updates your address of record, so if you move in November and file in February, the return handles it. Time the filing before refund and notice season. If the IRS mails a notice to your old address after your forwarding has expired, the notice still counts as legally sent, and "I moved" is a weak defense against the penalties attached to it.

What else does a change of address miss?

It missesHow to update it
The IRSForm 8822, or your next filed return
Your state tax agencyYour state's own change-of-address form
Voter registrationYour state or county election office
Driver's licenseThe DMV, usually within weeks of moving
Banks and card issuersEach one directly, through its own process

The pattern is the same everywhere: the USPS form moves your mail, and every institution that needs your address gets told separately. Treat the change-of-address filing as step one of the move, not the whole job, and work through the list above in the first week. The forwarding window is a safety net, not a notification system.
