Home > Guides > Canada Post vs couriers
No single carrier is cheapest for every parcel. Canada Post usually wins on light parcels and flat-rate boxes within Canada, Purolator wins on speed within its Canadian network, and UPS or FedEx win on heavier parcels and US-bound shipments where brokerage fees matter. Match the carrier to the parcel, not the other way around.
One honest note up front: LetterAgent sells Canada Post Xpresspost labels only (Canada-only, 5 kg max). If you're shipping internationally or need courier-specific services, LetterAgent can't do that. The comparison below still helps you pick the right carrier.
| Parcel | Likely cheapest | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Light parcel within Canada | Canada Post | Best retail rates for small domestic parcels; flat-rate boxes dodge dimensional pricing |
| Time-sensitive within Canada | Purolator | Canadian network built for speed; strong next-day coverage |
| Heavy parcel | UPS or FedEx | Courier networks price heavy freight better |
| US-bound parcel | Canada Post (via USPS handoff) | No brokerage fee; couriers add one |
| Oversized or awkward | UPS or FedEx | Better handling for non-standard sizes |
For light parcels moving within Canada, Canada Post's retail and online rates are hard to beat, especially with flat-rate boxes that ignore dimensional weight. One rule applies to every carrier: online-bought labels are cheaper than counter rates for the same service. Buying at the counter is the most expensive way to ship with anyone.
Speed inside Canada. Purolator's network is Canadian end to end, which shows in next-day and two-day coverage between major cities. For documents and parcels where a day matters, Purolator often beats Canada Post's express options on transit time at a comparable price. If the deadline is the deciding factor rather than the dollars, start your comparison here.
Heavier parcels and US or international destinations. The couriers' networks are built for freight, so their per-kilo pricing improves as parcels get heavier. For US-bound shipments, compare the total carefully: couriers add a brokerage fee for clearing customs that can exceed the shipping charge on low-value goods, while Canada Post hands off to USPS with no brokerage fee. That one fee flips a lot of "cheap courier quote" comparisons.
A quote that ignores these is a fantasy number. Always compare the all-in total for your actual parcel, not the headline rate.
