Can I fax internationally?

Yes, faxing internationally is possible in general, but LetterAgent sends faxes to US and Canadian numbers only, so an overseas number needs another route. International faxing works like domestic faxing with a country code added, though time zones, line quality, and office hours complicate it.

LetterAgent faxing is available in testing for US and Canadian fax numbers only, with no inbound faxes. If your recipient sits outside the US and Canada, LetterAgent cannot send that fax, and you will need an online fax service or a physical machine with international dialing. The rest of this guide covers how international faxing works in general.

How do you dial an international fax?

An international fax number has three parts: the exit code for the country you are calling from, the country code of the destination, and the local fax number. From the US and Canada, the exit code is 011, so a fax to the United Kingdom starts with 011-44, followed by the local number with its leading zero dropped. Many online fax services let you enter the number in international format with a plus sign instead, and they handle the exit code for you.

The leading-zero detail catches people out. In many countries, local numbers start with a zero that is only used for domestic calls, called a trunk prefix. When dialing from abroad, drop that zero. A number written as 020 7946 0000 in London becomes 011-44-20-7946-0000 from North America. If your fax fails with a "number not recognized" style error, a kept trunk zero is the first thing to check.

What makes international faxing harder than domestic?

ProblemWhy it happensHow to handle it
Time zonesYour afternoon may be the recipient's middle of the nightSend during the recipient's business hours when possible
Office hours and holidaysNational holidays differ by countryCheck the recipient's holiday calendar before a deadline send
Longer, noisier routesMore network hops mean more chances for line faultsExpect retries; use standard resolution, not fine detail
Different paper sizesMany countries use A4, not US LetterAsk whether the recipient prints A4 or Letter, and size pages accordingly

Does faxing abroad cost more?

Usually, yes. Phone carriers and fax services price international calls by destination, and some destinations cost far more than others. Online fax services often bundle international sending into a plan or charge per page by country, so check the rate for your specific destination before sending a long document. A fifty-page fax to a costly destination can surprise you if you assume domestic pricing.

That pricing gap is one reason email and secure file sharing have replaced fax for most cross-border business. Fax survives internationally mainly where the receiving office demands it, such as some government counters, medical offices, and legal departments that still publish a fax number as their official channel.

What should you check before sending?

Confirm the number with the recipient in writing first, since an international misdial can deliver sensitive pages to a stranger in another country. Confirm the recipient's office hours in their time zone, and ask whether anyone will be at the machine when the fax arrives, since a shared machine in an empty office is a privacy risk. Include a cover note with your name, your phone number with its country code, and the total page count, so the recipient can tell at a glance whether anything went missing.

For anything with a deadline, such as a filing or a contract notice, send early and follow up by phone or email. An international fax that fails twice on a noisy line can eat a whole business day, and a deadline measured in the recipient's time zone may pass while you are still asleep.

Are there alternatives when fax will not work?

If the receiving office accepts email, a scanned PDF with a delivery receipt is the simplest substitute, though it lacks the fax confirmation page. Some offices accept documents through a secure upload portal, which is better for privacy than either fax or email. For legal documents, check whether the destination country requires an original, a notarized copy, or an apostille; a fax, however clean, may not satisfy that requirement at all.
