Can I use Informed Delivery to track a letter I sent?

No. Informed Delivery is strictly recipient-side: it shows you scans of mail arriving at your own address, never mail you sent to someone else. There is no sender dashboard and no way to look up someone else's mailbox. If you want to know when your letter arrives, you need a tracking service bought at send time: Certified Mail, Registered Mail, or a parcel service with end-to-end scans.

Why can't senders see the scans?

Informed Delivery scans are taken during the final delivery sequence, when mail is being sorted for the recipient's carrier route. The system keys those images to the delivery address, not to the sender. Opening that to senders would mean letting any sender look into any recipient's mailbox stream, which is the privacy problem the recipient-only design exists to prevent.

What is Informed Delivery actually for?

It emails you grayscale images of your incoming letter mail each morning, so you know what is in your mailbox before you open it. People use it to spot a missing expected check, confirm a bill arrived, or watch for a package label on a letter-sized piece. It covers the address you verified at signup, and only that address: mail sent from your house to anywhere else never appears in your feed.

What counts as proof of delivery if I can't track it?

For ordinary first-class mail, there is no delivery confirmation at all: the post office does not scan it on delivery, and absence of a return is your only signal. Certified Mail changes that: you get a mailing receipt, an electronic record of delivery attempts, and the recipient's signature (or the fact of refusal). Registered Mail goes further with a chain-of-custody log at every handoff, which is why courts and tax authorities accept it as proof.

Can the recipient's Informed Delivery help me?

Only if the recipient cooperates. Their dashboard shows images of incoming mail, including your envelope's exterior, a day or two before it arrives. If you are coordinating with someone, they can forward you the daily digest as an early "it's on the way" signal. But you cannot sign up for it on their behalf, and their images will never show you the contents, only the outside of the envelope.
