Can I upgrade to faster shipping after I've already sent a package?

Generally no. Once a postal service like Canada Post or USPS accepts your parcel, the service level is fixed: there is no way to pay extra mid-journey to make it faster. Some couriers offer shipper-initiated intercept options that can reroute a package, but a true speed upgrade after sending is rare. The reliable upgrade is buying the speed you need before you ship.

Why can't postal services change the service level?

Postal sorting is mechanical. When your parcel enters the system, its service level determines which sort streams, containers, and transport it goes into: express parcels travel separately from regular ones at every stage. Moving one parcel between streams mid-journey would require a person to find it among thousands and re-induct it, which is why no postal service offers it. The label bought the service; the parcel is committed. Even paying at the counter again would not help, because the clerk has no mechanism to reach into the stream.

What is a delivery intercept, and does it speed things up?

Delivery Intercept is a courier feature that lets the shipper, not the recipient, change a package mid-transit: reroute it to a new address, hold it for pickup, or in some cases return it to sender. It does not make the package move faster; it changes where it goes or stops it. It also usually carries a fee, and it can fail if the package is already out for delivery or on the final vehicle. If you sent a parcel to the wrong address or to someone who moved, intercept is exactly the right tool. If you just want it there sooner, it will not do that.

What can I change after shipping?

Recipients of courier parcels have the best options, through free tools like UPS My Choice and FedEx Delivery Manager: reroute to a pickup location, reschedule the delivery day, or put the package on vacation hold. Canada Post parcels can be redirected in transit through their tools in some cases, and held for pickup at the post office. None of these make delivery earlier than the original estimate; they rearrange the last mile around your schedule. For postal services, the honest answer is that once the parcel is in the stream, your levers are down to tracking and waiting.

When is a duplicate shipment the real answer?

Sometimes the deadline matters more than the postage. If the parcel you sent will not arrive in time no matter what, the working fix is a second, faster shipment: send a new parcel with the service level you actually need, and let the first one arrive when it arrives. This doubles your cost, so it is only worth it for genuinely urgent items. The lesson to bank for next time: when the date matters, buy the faster service up front, because no upgrade path exists after the fact and duplicate shipping is the most expensive fix of all.
