Both are free: sign up for whichever carrier sends you more parcels, or both. The free tiers send delivery alerts, show an estimated delivery window, let you reroute packages to a pickup location, and let you put deliveries on vacation hold. The catch: delivery alerts can spoil surprise gifts by telling the recipient a package is coming.
| Feature | UPS My Choice | FedEx Delivery Manager |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free basic tier (paid premium exists) | Free |
| Alerts | Email or text when a package ships, is out for delivery, or arrives | Email or text with the same stages |
| Delivery window | Estimated two-hour delivery window for eligible parcels | Estimated delivery date, updated through the day |
| Hold for pickup | Reroute to a UPS store or access point | Reroute to a FedEx Office or hold location |
| Vacation hold | Hold deliveries while you are away | Hold deliveries while you are away |
The practical value is that packages addressed to your home address are detected automatically. You do not need a tracking number in advance: the carrier matches incoming parcels to your registered address and they appear in your dashboard. This is genuinely useful for parcels other people send you, where you would otherwise learn about them only when the driver rings.
A package sitting on a porch for three days while you travel is the single most avoidable loss in home delivery. Both services let you pause deliveries during your trip and release them when you return, which is cheaper than replacing a stolen parcel. If your porch is visible from the street, setting a vacation hold is the closest thing to free insurance. The alternative is asking a neighbor to pull packages inside, which works until your neighbor is also away.
Here is the part nobody tells you: the alerts fire for every parcel addressed to you, including the ones someone is trying to surprise you with. The alert usually names the shipper, so a gift your partner ordered secretly shows up in your inbox as "a package from Tiffany is arriving Thursday." Some people consider this a feature (early warning about porch pirates), but if you enjoy surprises, disable push alerts in the weeks before your birthday and the holidays, or have gifts sent to the sender's own address first. This quirk is identical on both platforms.
Probably not. The paid UPS tier adds a calendar view and delivery to a second address, but the free tier covers alerts, windows, hold for pickup, and vacation hold, which is everything most people use. FedEx's core offering has no paid upsell for these basics. If most of your parcels come by Canada Post, neither service helps you directly: they only track their own carrier's network. In Canada, both UPS My Choice and FedEx Delivery Manager work for Canadian addresses, so the question is just which carrier your parcels arrive on.
