Can I buy a shipping label online and drop the parcel at the post office?

Yes. A shipping label bought anywhere, from Canada Post's site to Shopify to a third-party seller, works for post-office drop-off as long as it's a Canada Post label for that parcel. The counter scans it; you don't need to buy postage at the counter. Just make sure the label is still within its validity window.

Does the post office care where you bought the label?

No. The post office doesn't sell the label and then check your receipt. It scans the barcode on the label, and if the barcode is live in Canada Post's system, the parcel is accepted. Where the money changed hands, Canada Post's site, your Shopify store, a reseller, doesn't matter to the scanner.

The one requirement is carrier match. A Canada Post label goes to a Canada Post counter. A label from a different carrier can't be dropped at the post office, because the post office's system can't read another carrier's barcode. This sounds obvious, but it's the single most common drop-off mistake: people bring a courier label to the post office because it's the closest counter.

Where you bought the labelWhat changes at the counter
Canada Post's site or appNothing: the counter scans it like any other label
Shopify or an ecommerce platformNothing: the platform's label is a Canada Post label
A third-party label sellerNothing, as long as the label is a genuine Canada Post label for that parcel
A different carrier's labelRejected: take it to that carrier's drop-off point instead

How does the drop-off actually go?

Pack and seal the box at home, print the label, and stick it on. At the post office, hand over the parcel or use the drop-off area if the outlet has one. The clerk scans the label, which registers the parcel in the tracking system, and gives you a receipt. Keep that receipt: it's your proof the parcel entered the system, and the tracking number on it is what you give the buyer.

You don't need to wait in the purchase line. Many outlets have a separate drop-off spot or will take a prepaid parcel at the counter ahead of customers buying postage. If the outlet is busy, ask; staff would rather scan a prepaid parcel in ten seconds than watch you wait behind five people buying stamps.

The scan at drop-off is also what starts the service clock. Until the label is scanned, the parcel is just a box with a sticker: no tracking events, no delivery commitment running. Drop it off the same day you told the buyer you shipped it, or the tracking will show a gap.

What can go wrong at the counter?

Three failures cover most of it. First, an unreadable label: printed too small, printed in draft mode, or smudged. The scanner has to read the barcode cleanly. If it can't, the clerk can't accept the parcel, and you'll be reprinting at home. Print at full size on plain paper; a label shrunk to fit looks fine to you and is unreadable to the scanner.

Second, a stale label. Labels have validity windows. A label bought weeks ago and only now dropped off may fail the scan, because the postage data behind it has expired. Buy the label when you're ready to ship, not a month ahead.

Third, a mismatch between the label and the parcel: the wrong box, the wrong weight class, the wrong destination. The scan ties the label to the shipment details behind it. If the parcel doesn't match, the clerk will flag it, and you'll be re-buying or correcting the label.

Can I do this with a LetterAgent label?

Yes. LetterAgent gives you a label PDF for a Canada Post Xpresspost shipment, Canada-only, up to 5 kg: describe the parcel to your AI assistant, approve the exact quoted price, pay once, and print the label. Take it to any post office counter the same way: the clerk scans it, no counter purchase needed. If you have no printer at all, ask about the QR-code printerless route instead.
