As of mid-October 2026, the USPS has not filed a January 2027 price increase for stamps, and January hikes have historically been for shipping services, not mailing services. The January 2026 hike was skipped entirely. The pattern USPS has followed is a July filing, so a July 2027 change is the likelier one to watch. Nothing is confirmed.
USPS had signaled that it expected to file price changes in both January and July of 2026 and 2027. Then it skipped the January 2026 filing for mailing services altogether: the November 2025 shipping announcement stated plainly that stamp prices would remain unchanged in January, and they did. The July 2026 increase, filed with the Postal Regulatory Commission in April, went ahead as planned and took effect July 12.
That tells you something useful about how USPS thinks about the calendar. The commission reviews every filing before prices change, and filings take weeks to prepare and approve. If a January 2027 stamp increase were coming, a filing would normally appear by late fall 2026. As of this writing, no such filing exists.
USPS splits its world into two pricing families. Mailing services (First-Class letters, postcards, Marketing Mail, Periodicals) are market-dominant products whose prices are tied to inflation and historically adjusted around July. Shipping services (Priority Mail, Priority Mail Express, Ground Advantage, Parcel Select) are competitive products priced by market conditions, and those have moved in January. In January 2026, Priority Mail rose about 6.6 percent and Ground Advantage about 7.8 percent while the stamp price did not move a cent.
This is why a January rumor about postage deserves a second look: if it happens, it almost certainly concerns parcels, not letters. The two price calendars run on different tracks.
The real January 2027 event is already known: the temporary 8 percent shipping price increase that USPS put in place on April 26, 2026 is set to expire at midnight Central Time on January 17, 2027. That increase touched Priority Mail, Priority Mail Express, Ground Advantage, and Parcel Select. First-Class stamps were explicitly excluded from it. USPS has said it will decide at that point whether a different long-term approach is needed, which means January could bring shipping prices down, hold them, or replace the temporary bump with something permanent. None of that affects the stamp.
| Timeframe | What is known | Stamps affected? |
|---|---|---|
| January 2026 | Shipping services raised; mailing services skipped | No |
| April 26, 2026 | Temporary 8% increase on competitive shipping products | No |
| July 12, 2026 | Mailing services raised ~4.8%; stamp to 82 cents | Yes |
| January 17, 2027 | Temporary shipping increase expires; USPS decides next step | No (expected) |
| July 2027 | No filing yet; the month to watch | Unconfirmed |
The honest answer is the Forever stamp: it covers a one-ounce letter no matter what you paid for it, so stamps bought at today's price keep working after the next increase. Businesses that mail in volume can time bulk purchases ahead of an announced filing (the April-to-July gap in 2026 gave about three months of warning). If you mail through a service, the quote reflects the postage in effect at send time, so scheduling mailings before a known effective date is the same trick, done for you.
