Why does mail take longer in December?

December mail slows because holiday package volume floods the same plants, trucks, and carriers that handle your letters, while winter weather and seasonal staffing add more drag. Letters still move, just later in the day and with less slack in the system. The practical fix is simple: mail anything time-sensitive early in the month, and never mail on the final day before you need it to arrive.

What slows December mailHow it hits your letter
Holiday package surgePlants and trucks are full of parcels; letter trays wait their turn
Heavier carrier loadsYour carrier spends more time on packages, so letter delivery runs later in the day
Seasonal workersExtra hands help, but temps are slower and make more sorting errors
Winter weatherStorms delay trucks and flights; one bad storm ripples for days
Shorter staffing windowsHoliday schedules and time off shrink the workforce at the worst moment

Is it just packages, or do letters slow down too?

Letters slow down as collateral damage. The postal network is one shared system: the same processing plants, the same trucks, the same carriers. When parcel volume spikes, everything queues behind it. A first-class letter might sit an extra day at a plant because the parcel conveyors are running at capacity, or arrive at your door in the evening instead of the morning because your carrier's truck was loaded with boxes first. The letter itself needs no extra handling; it just travels through a congested system.

Why do carriers deliver so late in December?

Because packages dictate the route. A carrier's day is built around parcel stops now, and letter delivery happens along the way. In December, some offices split routes, run second trips, or deliver packages on Sundays, which pulls regular carriers off their normal letter rhythm. If your mail shows up at dinner time instead of lunch, that is the holiday schedule at work, not a lost letter.

Do holiday cards get special treatment?

No. A greeting card moves through the same system as a bill or a bank statement. There is no "card lane." What does help cards is that they are the ideal machinable shape: flat, rectangular, flexible. Cards survive December better than parcels precisely because the letter equipment keeps humming even when the parcel side is buried. Mail them early, use a standard-size envelope, and they will usually beat the packages.

When should I actually mail things in December?

For anything with a real deadline, treat early December as on time and mid-December as late. Carriers publish holiday mailing deadlines each year, and those are the last safe dates, not the recommended ones. A letter mailed in the first week of December has the whole system at its disposal. The same letter mailed a few days before Christmas is competing with the peak of the peak. If you are sending through a service like LetterAgent, approve the send a few days earlier than you think you need to; the print-and-mail step adds its own small lead time on top of postal transit.

Does tracking help in December?

For letters, the registered option (US Certified Mail or Canada Registered Mail) gives you tracking and proof of delivery, which matters more in December than any other month: when everything is late, knowing where your letter is beats wondering. Standard letters have no tracking either way, so if the contents matter, the upgrade is worth it.
