White glove delivery is a premium freight service where the crew brings your item inside to the room you choose, unpacks it, and takes the packaging away. It is a step above threshold or curbside delivery, where the driver only gets the item to your door. LetterAgent's shipping labels are Canada-only Xpresspost and do not include white glove service, so this guide explains the general service.
The core promise is room-of-choice placement. Instead of leaving a 200-pound treadmill in your driveway, the delivery team carries it to wherever you want it: the second-floor bedroom, the basement gym, the back office. Then they unpack it, set aside or assemble the basic parts depending on the provider, and haul away the boxes, pallets, and foam. You are left with the item in place and no mountain of packaging to deal with.
It is usually scheduled, not a surprise knock. The carrier calls ahead to set an appointment window, often a few hours wide, and the crew is typically two people rather than a solo driver. That staffing is the whole reason the service exists: one driver with a hand truck cannot safely move a piano, a sectional sofa, or a commercial fridge up a flight of stairs.
| Service level | What you get | What you handle yourself |
|---|---|---|
| Curbside | The item is left at the curb or end of the driveway | Everything from the curb inward, including stairs |
| Threshold | The item is brought to your front door or garage | Carrying it inside, unpacking, debris removal |
| Room of choice | The item is placed in a specific room | Unpacking and packaging disposal |
| White glove | Room of choice plus unpacking and packaging removal | Very little: inspect the item and sign |
Note that "signature required" is a separate add-on, not the same thing. A parcel can require a signature and still be left on your porch. White glove is about labor and placement, not about who signs for what. Many white glove deliveries do include a signature step, but that is incidental to the service.
The math is simple: white glove is worth it when the item is too heavy, too awkward, or too fragile for you to handle, and too valuable to risk on a curb drop. Large furniture, exercise equipment, appliances, and anything that needs assembly benefit most. It also matters when there is no freight elevator or loading dock, because residential deliveries to walk-up buildings are where standard freight service struggles hardest.
It is overkill for anything you could carry with a friend. A boxed bookshelf, a standard mattress in a bag, or a desktop printer does not need a two-person crew and a scheduled appointment. Match the service to the item, not to the price tag.
Inspect before you sign. White glove crews expect you to look the item over, and noting damage on the delivery receipt at the door is far easier than proving later that the scratch was not your fault. Clear a path to the room in advance, measure doorways and stairwells against the item's dimensions, and keep pets and kids out of the way. A crew that cannot fit the item through the door will leave it where it stops fitting, and that becomes your problem.
