What does Registered Mail cover in Canada?

Canada Post Registered Mail gives you proof of mailing, tracking, signature on delivery, and limited coverage against loss or damage, with higher coverage available at extra cost. It covers the item's declared value only up to its limit, and it does not cover the contents of your letter. The word "cover" hides two different things here, and keeping them apart is the whole point.

What Registered Mail gives youWhat it means in practice
Proof of mailingA receipt from the post office counter showing the item was accepted, with its tracking number
TrackingScans as the item moves through the postal system, viewable online
Signature on deliveryThe recipient, or someone at the address, signs for the item; you get a delivery record
Limited coverageCompensation for loss or damage up to the included limit, based on declared value
Optional extra coverageHigher limits purchasable at the counter for items worth more

What does the coverage actually pay for?

The coverage attached to Registered Mail is compensation for the item itself if Canada Post loses it or damages it in transit, up to the included limit, and up to the value you declared when you mailed it. It is not insurance on the deal behind the letter. If you mail a contract, a cheque, or a legal notice, the coverage does not pay you for the value of the contract or the amount on the cheque; it pays for the loss of the mail piece. That distinction surprises people, and it matters most exactly when the item is important.

For most letters, the real value of Registered Mail is not the coverage at all. It is the chain of custody: a counter receipt, tracking scans, and a signature at the other end. Courts, government agencies, landlords, and banks accept that chain as proof that something was sent and received, which is why Registered Mail is the standard choice for legal notices, tax correspondence, and anything with a deadline attached.

What is not covered?

Several things fall outside Registered Mail, and knowing them in advance avoids a nasty surprise. Coverage does not extend to consequential losses, meaning the money you lost because a letter arrived late is not claimable, even if the delay was Canada Post's fault. Items that are prohibited in the mail, or that were packed in a way that caused their own damage, are excluded too. And if nobody is available to sign, the item is held at the post office for pickup rather than left at the door, which is a feature for security but a delay if the recipient is slow to collect it.

How is this different from US Certified Mail?

The two services look alike but differ in one important way. US Certified Mail provides proof of mailing and a delivery record, but it includes no coverage against loss or damage at all; coverage in the US is a separate add-on. Canada's Registered Mail bundles a limited amount of coverage in by default. So a Canadian sender gets a small safety net without asking for it, while an American sender who wants coverage must buy it separately. LetterAgent's registered option for Canadian recipients uses Canada Registered Mail, and its certified option for US recipients uses US Certified Mail, so the service matches the destination country's system.

When is Registered Mail the right choice?

Use it whenever the date of delivery could matter later: legal notices, contract cancellations, tax filings, government applications, and disputes with a company. For an ordinary personal letter, it is overkill, and the signature requirement can actually slow delivery if the recipient is rarely home. One practical tip: Registered Mail must be handed over at a post office counter, not dropped in a street mailbox, so build a counter visit into your plans. If you mail through LetterAgent, the registered handling is part of the service: describe the letter to your AI assistant, approve the exact quoted price, and it is printed and mailed with the registered option.
