When should I mail Thanksgiving cards?

Mail Thanksgiving cards in mid-November, roughly two weeks before the holiday, so they arrive the week of Thanksgiving. For 2026, that means dropping them in the mail between November 9 and November 13; mail to the other coast or across the border deserves a few extra days.

Do Thanksgiving cards need to arrive before the holiday?

Ideally, yes, and the week of Thanksgiving is the sweet spot. A card that lands on the Monday or Tuesday before Thanksgiving gets opened in the holiday mood and often sits on the mantel for the gathering. A card that arrives after the holiday reads as an afterthought, even if it was mailed on time. Aim for arrival, not just a timely mailing. If your cards will be late, a short handwritten line inside ("thinking of you this season") softens the timing more than an apology on the envelope ever could.

What about Canadian Thanksgiving?

Canadian Thanksgiving already passed this year: it falls on the second Monday of October, which was October 12 in 2026. If you send Thanksgiving cards to Canadian family, this guide applies to their next one, October 11, 2027. The same two-week rule holds, but remember that Canadian cards take a few extra days to cross into the US, and US cards heading north clear a border handoff. Mail both directions a few days earlier than you would domestically.

Can I use an online service to send Thanksgiving cards?

You can, with one caveat: services like LetterAgent print and mail letters, not folded greeting cards with photo inserts. If your Thanksgiving message is a letter-style card (a single-sided printed page in a standard envelope), describe it to your AI assistant, approve the exact quoted price, and it is printed and mailed with first-class postage. If you want a traditional folded card with family photos, buy those from a card printer and mail them yourself. Either way, the mid-November window is the same.

How do I address Thanksgiving cards for the whole family?

Write the household's surname on the envelope ("The Alvarez Family") rather than listing every member. For couples where one partner kept a different name, both full names fit on the address line: "Jordan Ellis and Priya Nair." If you are sending to adult children who have moved out, send separate cards; a Thanksgiving card addressed to a parent's house does not travel to the apartment across town. And double-check addresses now, not in mid-November: holiday cards are the single biggest source of address-correction surprises each year, since families move between one Thanksgiving and the next.
