Can I ship wine or alcohol?

Shipping alcohol is one of the most restricted things you can put in a parcel. In the US, individuals cannot mail alcohol at all; only licensed shippers can send it through UPS or FedEx with adult signature. In Canada, each province sets its own liquor rules, and most interprovincial shipments are blocked. The carrier's license rules apply no matter whose label is on the box.

Who you areWhat is allowed
US individual sending a bottle as a giftNot allowed through USPS; private carriers require a licensed alcohol shipper account, which individuals cannot open
US winery or licensed retailerAllowed through UPS or FedEx with an alcohol shipping agreement, destination-state permits, and adult (21+) signature
Canadian sending wine to another provinceBlocked in most cases; provinces control liquor sales and most do not permit personal interprovincial shipments
Canadian winery shipping within its provinceAllowed where the province licenses it; the winery's own compliance team handles the rules

Why is mailing alcohol illegal for individuals in the US?

USPS is a federal entity, and federal law bars it from carrying intoxicating beverages. This is not a policy the post office can waive: it is written into federal statute, and postal inspectors treat a bottle of wine in the mail the way they would treat any other prohibited item. UPS and FedEx, as private carriers, are allowed to carry alcohol only for shippers who hold a license and sign a carrier-specific alcohol shipping agreement.

The agreement is the key most people miss. It is not enough to be of legal age or to write "wine" on the box. UPS and FedEx audit their alcohol shippers, require proof of the relevant state licenses, and require an adult signature on delivery (21+ in the US, with ID checked). A driver who hands the box to a teenager can cost the shipper its agreement. Some states are dry for direct shipment entirely, meaning even licensed wineries cannot ship there.

What are Canada's rules on shipping wine?

Canada runs liquor through provincial monopolies and licensing boards, and most provinces take a dim view of alcohol arriving by mail from another province. Ontario's rules, for example, generally require alcohol to move through the LCBO's channels, not a courier. A few provinces allow limited direct-to-consumer winery shipments, and the federal government has opened personal interprovincial wine transport in small quantities for travelers, but those allowances cover a person carrying bottles home, not a parcel in the mail stream.

The practical result: if you are an individual in Canada wanting to send a bottle to a friend in another province, there is usually no legal channel through a normal parcel service. Wineries that ship directly do so under their own provincial licenses and only to provinces whose rules accept it. LetterAgent sells Canada-only flat-rate Xpresspost labels, and a label cannot override Canada Post's acceptance rules or provincial liquor law, so check the carrier's rules before assuming a wine shipment can go.

How do licensed shippers pack alcohol?

Licensed alcohol shippers use molded pulp or foam bottle shippers: rigid inserts with cutouts that cradle each bottle and keep glass from touching glass. These inserts exist because a single broken bottle does not just ruin one parcel; leaking liquid can destroy neighboring parcels on the same truck, and carriers hold the shipper responsible. Standard bubble wrap and a sturdy box can work for a single bottle in a pinch, but the molded shippers are the industry standard for a reason.

Every alcohol parcel also carries labeling that marks it as containing alcohol and requiring an adult signature. The signature requirement is not optional and it is not waivable at the door: if no adult is home, the parcel goes back to a pickup point. This is also why "just don't tell them it is wine" is a bad plan: an undeclared bottle that breaks in transit exposes you to damage claims for other people's ruined parcels.
