Buy a label online, print it at a hotel desk or copy shop, and drop the parcel at a carrier location near you, using a return address that will still reach you after you leave town. Plan the return address before you seal the box: a parcel that bounces back to a hotel you have left is hard to recover.
The return address is the address the parcel goes to if delivery fails, so a hotel room number is a poor choice once checkout passes. Better options, in order: your home address, a trusted friend or family member who can receive mail for you, or the address of your next stop if you will be there when a return could plausibly arrive. Put a phone number and email on the label or inside the box as well, so the carrier can reach you directly instead of relying on the return address alone.
If you are travelling within Canada, LetterAgent can provide a Canada Post Xpresspost label through your AI assistant for parcels up to 5 kg: describe the parcel, approve the exact quoted price, pay once through Stripe, and receive a PDF label. That only helps while you are in Canada and the destination is Canadian, so a trip abroad needs a local carrier or postal service at your destination instead.
| Return address option | Works when | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Your home address | Someone can collect mail at home | Returns may sit until you get back |
| A friend or family member | They agree in advance and are home | Tell the recipient who might receive a return |
| Your next stop | You will be there for at least a week | Hotels may refuse parcels for non-guests |
| A parcel locker or hold point | The carrier offers hold-for-pickup | Pickup windows expire, sometimes fast |
Hotel business centres and front desks will often print a PDF for a guest, and copy shops and libraries are a reliable fallback. Save the label PDF to your phone before you go looking for a printer, and carry the parcel with you: staff can print the label, but they cannot print it from a description. If no printer is available, buy the label at the carrier counter instead; you lose the online discount, but you gain a label printed on the spot with no extra errand.
Pack before you travel if you can. A roll of tape, a marker, and a spare padded mailer weigh almost nothing and remove the scramble for supplies in an unfamiliar town. If you must buy supplies on the road, a pharmacy or dollar store usually stocks mailers and tape, and a grocery store bag makes a poor substitute for a proper mailer on anything fragile.
Timing also matters for the recipient. A parcel arriving while they are away can sit on a porch or in a mailroom, so ask them when they will be home before you ship, not after. A short message, "shipping Tuesday, watch for it Wednesday," prevents more lost parcels than any amount of insurance.
Call the carrier with the tracking number rather than waiting for an email reply, and keep the receipt photo handy: agents ask for the tracking number, the destination, and the drop-off location first. If the parcel is returned, redirect it to your home address if the carrier allows rerouting, or ask the friend holding your mail to collect it. If it is lost, file the claim from the road: claims have deadlines, and waiting until you are home can put you past them.
